    Steering box leaking badly

    Hi everyone,

I blew my steering box on the weekend.
From what I can see my steering box is leaking power steering fluid out of the seal on the input shaft.
From full on the reservoir to the steering box making bad noises is only a couple of minutes of driving so its leaking very fast.
What are peoples experiences with rebuilding steering boxes? And is it worth buying a new/reconditioned one since mine needs to be tightened to the point of it grinding slightly to have minimal slop.
Also I drove home 4 hours with no power steering (no fluid), would that have damaged my power steering pump??

    Cheers,
    Riley

your pump wont be happy, at a minimum you need a full flush up on it.

Depending on how bad its leaking and from where its leaking you can reseal them quite well.

IF theres any radial movement on the shafts you wont get the seals to least long.

Depending on how quickly it needs doing an what part of north east victoria you're in Im only about 4 weeks off of starting my run north for Xmas.

    Thanks Dave,
    Im in Geelong.
I'll pull the box out in the next couple of days and go from there. If there is movement what is the next steps to resolving that?
What involves "flush" of the pump??

    Thanks again.

drop the delivery line off, take the serpentine belt off, remove the supply hose, clean out the reservior clean out the supply line, refit then fill the res with fluid and turn the pump by hand

do the same for the return line, HP line and then depending on what you find wrong with the box, clean out the box.

Geelongs only just down the road from melbourne, Im under the pump at the moemtn but might have a slot in december if you need a hand, or if you can pull the pump I might be able to sneak it onto the bench of an evening.

Drop me a DM or give me a call if you need a hand.
