    Coin tray stuck

    98 D1

The 'coin tray' on passenger side is stuck.
Searching in here and more widely I know that there are 4 tabs that need compressing, 2 top 2 bottom, the same as for the clock housing.
    Clock housing comes out ok.
Coin tray will not budge even when ( I think) the 4 tabs are compressed. I have sprayed some silicon lube in there didnt seem to help.
I just want to run some wires in from the back and fit an EGT guage in there.

Any wise tips available to get this out?

Have you any old credit card sized cards of some type. Have to be very strudy, and not quite as thick as a credit card.
I use old ID card, or whatever I can find that isnt' quite as thick as a credit card.
(Vic) driving license is still a bit too thick.
They can work, but also make it harder too.

I'll post some pics, but my method is to insert the card at the top edge, start in the centre and and then jimmy the card in so it's long edge is now sitting in the top gap of the coin tray.
It will have a lot of resistance, and you will feel it push itself against the retaining tabs.

Then use a second card, but only on one corner of the bottom gap edge. Again it will be very tight as the gap between dash slot and coin tray is not much reduced as you already have a card in the top.
But if you try to get both tabs released at the bottom edge, you're fighting a losing battle.

Then I use friction with fingers on the inside of the coin tray, but NOT the bottom return edge(the small wall), as this will delaminate and break off and you have worse issues.
But with a bit of grip on the inside felt, and using the cards to help it pop out, it kind'a snaps out at the three tabs.

Then slide the bottom card across to release the last lower tab and easy peasy from there.

Like I said, I'll post pics ASAP for ya.

I find it easier to jiggle it this way and that and then finally get it in flat ...

    Then the bottom card ....

Whilkst it looks like it was easy, it wasn't. It was a fight just to find the gap to get the card to go in. remember it's a very tight fit in there, and a card, even tho only a mil or two makes it tighter fit..

But, I only do the one side, jimmy it a bit this way and that, and only work on pulling the coin tray from the inside, not that small wall. Mine is coming loose, but still usable.
Both card and tray at the same time.
It's all by feel, you will feel it slip over the tabs, you will fail many times, cards will slide out without coin tray, but perseverance pays off.
As you can see three corners are out, but that last tab still won't give it up!

Slide bottom to the other side and pop.

I took photos of the upper and lower tabs so you can see what you're fighting.
    Doesnt' need lube.

I reckon a couple of ultra thin metallic card shaped and sized sliders will do a better job, lets say if there were less than a mil thick ...
I've tried plastic paint scrapers .. too flimsy when you push them to unlatch the tabs.

Have to emphasise... it's not easy. I broke out a sweat doing this just a few minutes ago ... I suppose it is 33°C up here at the moment, but a bit of melodrama never hurt anyone!

Thanks for going to that trouble AK much appreciated.

I got it out before I saw it :-0

My error was not realising that one of the tabs is offset and as I was using strips of CC about 20mm wide, one of them was missing the tab.

Anyway I managed to get it out after dropping the glovebox and pushing/jiggling it from behind while compressing the tabs,so all good.
