I tried to check this by cranking with the distributor cap off to see if the rotor is spinning. The rotor was spinning. They don't spin as quickly as I was imagining, I pictured them spinning like a top.
IME with the dizzy driven EFI v8s if it makes a single spark on ignition on or off its always the amp. Its the ones that dont spark at all that cause headaches.

Dizzy speed is half cranking speed with from memory on a v8 is about 300rpm which is 150rpm for the dizzy or about 2.5 turns a second.
