It will quiten down the intake noise of the diesel engine somewhat if it is installed. The main reason people take them off is to fit dual batteries. I would say it is useful for creating a slight venturi effect into the airbox, helping with intake air travel/ speed?
The science suggests this, but whether or not it ACTUALLY helps is anyones guess without further(and probably pointless) investigation. We are only dealing with a small capacity, medium output engine with the 300Tdi.
Besides, the 3.9 V8 in standard trim will easily breathe through it...
