    air intake D1 diesel




    When I purchased my D1 300tdi the "trumpety" part attached to the air filter box was missing/removed.... does it matter that it is not there??? I had my car serviced by Murray Kingman recently and he made no mention of it, so I presume it's not necessary.

    It will quiten down the intake noise of the diesel engine somewhat if it is installed. The main reason people take them off is to fit dual batteries. I would say it is useful for creating a slight venturi effect into the airbox, helping with intake air travel/ speed?
    The science suggests this, but whether or not it ACTUALLY helps is anyones guess without further(and probably pointless) investigation. We are only dealing with a small capacity, medium output engine with the 300Tdi.

    Besides, the 3.9 V8 in standard trim will easily breathe through it...

    My D1 came back from a service at a Land Rover specialists some years ago missing the air intake hose that used to run between the filter box and the wheel arch. When I complained about this they said it was a Land Rover recommended modification (or words to that effect) to reduce filter clogging from sucking in road dust thrown up by the wheel...
    ...I still don't know if I should have believed them or not.

    mmmm, If that air intake was a compact looking 'S' type of one, they include a small inline 'precleaner' cyclone type dust deflector. I think LR used these as fitment FOR dusty conditions!!
    But, The straightforward convoluted 90degree elbow one Does just draw from the wheel arch.
    I do agree that they throw heaps of dust into the wheel arch though, just look at the 200Tdi in the early D1's...they draw air from the inner guard and constantly have filthy air filters.

    You live between Canberra and Sydney and you go 500km to Bellingen for a service?

    mate its a 3.9l v8 and ive had it on and tried it w it off and the differance is very little except with a little more noise on intake but even then not much differance i need to move it to put the second battery in there so if u want, when i do it i will save it for u to put on yours if u like i will send it to u

    I removed the elbow section some years ago, after driving on a newly laid tar road.
    I think the council were experimenting with used sump oil or something similar. It completely destroyed a brand new filter. The air & anything in it, is drawn passed the rubber seal between the guard & the inner skirt. Not one of LR's better ideas.
    I,m still considering a snorkel. I don't do many deep creek crossings but I suppose it only has to save your engine once to pay for it's self. I would be more interested in cooler intake air. With this in mind, does anyone have an opinion as to there viability?

    Long story - don't ask.... well only to say that the guy I purchased vehile off uses him (even then he sends them up to Murray - knows what he's on about at realistic rates.... needed a new head).

    Yes I see I made a mistake wrt to it being a V8 picture, and yes I now realise there's a space for an elbow to go into wheel arch in 300tdi...
