Do you have a trailer socket? If so, does it's wiring harness go up under the right hand side of the vehicle, to the right hand rear lights? Check behind the plastic panel inside the back of the Disco.

Grab a test light and get someone to put there foot on the brake pedal and see if there is power in the socket of the light ( mine rusted out once )

I suspect you have an intermittant short in the trailer socket.
The trailer flasher will light on first flash or when a trailer is connected in time with L or R indicator, or if you have a bullbar with indicators in it. The trailer indicator is set off by a current drop in the circuit, so if you have a bull bar with indicators replace the bulbs with 5W ones. Your indicator issue also sounds like there's either a blown or disfunctional indicator bulb on the vehicle though.

Disco1s don't have left and right dash indicators. Just one that flashed regardless of you intended directional adjustment
The trailer light on the dash is to tell you your trailer indicators are working. If you have extra indicators on your car (bullbar for example) then it will also flash as it detects the extra load and thinks it is a trailer.
