    Steering

Hi, recently repaired steering box on 1998 Tdi300. I centred the steering box so it was equal turns on the steering wheel not trusting my original marks as they gave me 1 & 3/4 turns to the right and about 2 & 1/2 to the left. The steering feels light and floaty despite tightening adjustment screw. Is everyone else's steering equal turns? PS still waiting for my 'Rave' to arrive so looking for advice in the meantime. Thanks Bill

Two ways to do this. (and you could have asked this in the tech forum)
Undo the drag link and turn the steering wheel to full Left lock, then turn back exactly two full turns.
    This should be centre.

You can double check this as later steering boxes have a locating hole in the bottom of the steering box and a corresponding groove in the drag link in which you fit an 8mm pin to centralise the box.

steering light and floaty might not be the box

If the steering was vague before the steering box rebuild, you might need to look else where

    possible sources:

    tie rod ends
    wheel bearings
    swivel hubs
    panhard rod bushes
    loose suspension bushes
    reduced caster from suspension lift
