    Roof Bars strength

Thinking about mounting a second spare tyre up on the factory roof bars for an up coming trip to the Simpson.
Are these roof bars strong enough to carry a tyre with rim over rough roads/tracks ?
And where's the best place to get cross bars from ?
    Thanks in advance.
    Peter.

Just been through similar deliberation and decided not to risk the factory roof rails. Tyre and rim 30kg+ compared with 50kg total for the roof rails without any consideration for road corrugations and whatever additional bits may end up there.

I ended up buying gutter mounted roof bars (trade type) to mount the spare wheel for our forthcoming trip.

As for costs, the gutter roof bars were cheaper than the roof rails, especially if you can wait for a sale.

    Regards

Better to get a set of full roof racks like Rhino or similar.
Probably cheaper and 10 times as strong.
I wouldn't carry anything much more than a surfboard on the factory rails, definately not a spare.

I think the weight according to the manual that the gutter racks can hold is something like 80 or 100kgs, but they can handle heaps more than that

P.S. Can and should are two completely different things
