Lift Kits for Disco and Range

Hi. Lately I have been seeing this pretty nasty looking Rangie getting around. (nasty = very jacked up. I mean I can see the nice new orange springs underneath and a few other interesting looking components. Muddies you name it its got it) I think it must be at least 6 or more inches above standard. It really looks like it means business for the bush. Are Rangies the same as disco 1's? Do they or can they use the same components? What I mean is is it possible to make my disco look as nasty and bush ready as this? The one thing I have noticed about being in the scrub with my disco is that it has a lousy departure angle. Does anyone have a picture of their D1 which looks hot and modified for the real stuff? I'm looking to spend some money on this soon and need some inspiration.

Another thing. I have the standard alloys with 235/16s on. What size can I go up to or is a better option for me to get new wheels and go bigger. Is it also possible to use the Snake Racing spacers to alter the track a few inches? has anyone done this?

    gidday mate

to make a truck bush ready, I reckon you need the following bits added

decent bullbar and winch( for protection and recovery)
    2 inch suspension lift
2 inch body lift (these two things will give you better clearance an departure angles)
some sort of tricky diffs ( to get the best traction possible in rocky/muddy conditions)
recovery gear (always use your own or at least have it)
UHF radio (for car to car comms)
esky/fridge (gets mighty thirsty out there )

but if you want to make it look tuff as well, then thats a personal touch. Mostly guys seem to go for
big wheels and tyres - now the sky is the limit here but most like the 33/12.5 or 35x12.5 's in muddie with offset sunraysia style rims
then you will need to cut the guards which isnt a big deal and add flares, say like LRA ones

check out this disco, to me its close to the ultimate bush truck with masses of flex (articulation) and muddies but not too wide so it doesnt need flares etc (yet???)

hope that may help some what

cool thanks. Was looking at the winches at ALDI 500 bucks 9500 lbs I think. Probably might be better going for a premier or TMAX I guess. Is there much difference between Rock Krawlers and muddies?

mate, dont know anything about the Aldi winch but it sounds cheap I reckon you get what you pay for in this world (with a few exceptions) and I have the T Max winch. At least if it gives up the ghost, you got somewhere to whinge to...I reckon that pimply faced kid at Aldi wouldn't give a flying f@ck about your faulty winch

re muddies or rock crawler tyres...well its a trade off. muddies are great in the bush and rock crawlers even better but on road the muddies would be much better than the others. to me, I need a tyre that is more than capable in the scrub but has at least some traction on a wet windy bitumen road....

Well I guess it would come close to a 6 inch lift 2" body then 2" suspension and some higher profile muddies on offset wheels they would probably raise it close to 2" i guess. Don't know what Im doing as far as diffs go though. I have tested this CDL on the sand though and I don't see it makes much difference and don't really understand whats its for since its constant 4wd. Unless it makes a difference going though mud I have never tested it like that

    Hey steve,

If you have seen mine than 2 suspension and 2 1/2 body lift is all you need to get a disco off road awsome

Have a look at suspensionstuff.com.au - dobinson coils and procomp shocks, I went for 27.5'' rear and 24.5'' front shocks. $1500 all up for my set up inc lra body lift. But with rear shocks that long you will need to retain the rear coil at the top and have dislocation conesin the axle.
Have a look at www.webshots.com search user knottyd2, I have some photos there

The cdl(center diff lock) tranfers equal power to the front and rear diffs. When not engaged it can transfer power unevenly from front to back(i'm sure someone will explain it better than me). They will go a long way without the cdl in but a lot further with it in.Here is mine with just a 2" lift and 32" tyres on the weekend.Scroll down to vid of green disco 1.Cheers Brett

I think you were right in the first eight words, should have stopped then - I bought an Aldi winch ( and changed the grease to marine grease as recommended), work fine for me, but then I've only tested it up a few 45% ridges at a friend's house, not bottomed out the vehicle and tried to scull drag it up a rock ledge. I look at it as cheap insurance - cheap winch better than no winch - I mean $499 - that's less than most hand winches. Like all things Aldi, its cheap because they want to sell them quick - all the winches wear sold from my local store in two days - they don't want them to sit on a shelf for two years.

The Aldi winch is supplied by Ironman or at least they were for the batch that I got. (do a search on the "Aldi winch")- Aldi returns policy is great - I got a 3 year replacement warranty on mine - it breaks, they give you a new one - no arguments, no fuss - they send it straight back to the supplier who has to replace it - that's their contract with the supplier - try that with TJM or ARB.

It you want to use if for competitions or solo crossings of the Amazon, buy a Warn, but if it's just for insurance like mine, buy a cheap one and if it's just to look "tough" - once it's installed and the control box under the bonnet, put a Warn sticker on the bar - very few can tell anyway.

    Hi Brett

Liked the videos. You got through that ok. I probably would have tried to get through it a bit slower but then that would probably be likely to get me bogged. hehehe I probably would have taken the chicken track too. Did you damage something on your front bar there? Anyway thats why i wanted to try and acheive the maximum height that I can to avoid undercarriage damage. Did you have ARB lockers or similar on that Disco.
On looking at your other vids it seems the chicken tracks wern't that easy either

Twin locked no damage to bar it just hit on the way in.Slow as you can is good but any slower and i would of been stuck i reckon.I am waying up body lift for better aproach and departure angles but its a lot of work and $.I may just put some spring spacers in and buy longer shockies as this won't need an engineers cert.I would probably need to adjust castor then but may work out cheaper than an engineers.Still pondering all of this so will take my time on my decision.Cheers Brett
