    Question Discovery's

    Heya Landy Lovers,

    I have a WhiteGOLD Disco 98' TDi SE7.
I like her alot but me m8 has a Dark Green Disco 96' ES.

So his has the leather seats duel sunroofs etc (a tad nicer, but alot more comphy!)

When I upgrade I want a TD5 for more power and the luxury model for the higher level of comfortability.

Do they make the 03' TD5's in an ES with leather seats and sunroofs??
Can you get the luxury model in a manual or just auto?
Is it still called the ES?

    Are the engines in the 99' - 02' better or the 03' - 04'???

Clearing up of this would be much appriceiated!!!

Both of you have the most trouble free models out
Upgrade and enjoy the fun of three amigos, and many other problems.

Do a search in this forum and you will see what I mean.
If my D1 dies, I'll rebuild it and make it better.
As you have the tiny diesel, and may wish to stick with another, look closely at the 3.9 Isuzu conversion. It is a far more reliable motor than the TD5.

As somebody with an '02 D2 TD5 Manual who has never had to put a spanner to it other than regular servicing and maintenance, and recently having to replace the clutch master cylinder (also did the slave at the same time) - I would disagree strongly with the comments above. Like any vehicle, if you find a good one to start with, use it sensibly and maintain it well, you will have no real problems with it. Yes - the D2 TD5 is known to have a few quirks, but a couple of simple, non-expensive mods can significantly reduce the likelihood of you having any serious problems. One big advantage is that the possible problems are all well documented on this site, as are the "fixes". Also, it certainly doesn't hurt to get to know a good, experienced Land Rover service agent who has had experience with this model. A good one will tell you what you need to do to avoid the common problem areas, and should be able to sell you any parts that you need to modify the vehicle where required. I have found a lot of good advice on this site, and have also been fortunate to find someone in Perth who knows these vehicles inside out, and can recommend and supply the things necessary to address most of the common faults before they happen.

I know many people with D2's, both petrol and diesel. I have yet to come across anyone who has had any significant problems, and who regrets buying the D2. I can tell you from personal experience, that for comfort and regular long distance travel, the D2 is a better vehicle than the D1 any day. On the other hand, if you are into serious off roading, the D1 is the better choice for a number of reasons.

My previous vehicle was a '95 D1 V8, which I was also very happy with, and only ever had a couple of very minor issues with, but for what I use the vehicle for, give me the D2 any day. If you come across anyone who bags either model and tells you that one is better than the other, ask if he has actually owned both, or is just repeating hearsay.
    Cheers .........

Thanks for the info so far.

1# What is the fuel economy like in the Td5's?
(In my Tdi I average 800km to a tank, if I take off the roof racks just short of 900km)

2# I like the look of the front lights on the 03'/04' modles, so that is why im leaning towards them. Also I thought the Td5 would have sorted out any teething issues from the earlier modles???

3#Also do the LR Defenders have the same Td5's as the Disco's?

I do a fare bit of towing so would prefur the extra power, but generally speaking i only do light 4wd work.

So what exactly is the top Td5 Disco called and what year make?
(eg. is it ''03' Td5 Discovery SE7 or ES7 etc)

Dual sunroofs? 7 seats? Leather? Just excited!!!
