Park brake lever
I had the car apart on the weekend (95 D1) fixing the stuck transfer case lever. That problem is now fixed and it is much easier to lock the centre diff and change from high and low range.
Since I put the car back together the hand brake doesn't work. When I push the button in it stays in, and even when the button is out, it doesn't ratchet as you pull the lever up. I assumed that I have put it back together incorrectly but can only find one way for it to go.
So my question is - has anyone else had this problem and how do you fix it?

The pawl is not in the correct position. I had this happen before but can't remember the details to correct it. I have a dim recollection that this happens when the handle is pulled beyond its operating range while the cable is disconnected.
The only thing I do remember is that it is difficult to get the clevis pin (for the cable) back in, when the pawl mechanism is in the correct position.

Well decided that I must have bent the mechanisim just enough to make it stick so went out a bought a working one from the wreckers. Only cost me $20 so that was ok.
I'm now stuck on getting the new one back into place. I dont seem to be able to align the shrowd that sticks through the floor around the cable into the bottom of the lever mechanisim. The result is that it almost goes in far enough but not quite so consequently the cable doesn't extend far enough to reach the lever.

have you pulled the sliding plunger too far out in the handbrake itself and have you got the pistons the correct way round as they are sloped.

Thought I would update this post.
After much stuffing around I found that the rubber boot (to keep mud and water out of your car) on the end of the cable was getting in the way and not allowing me to slide the cable up far enough into the lever mechanisim.
With the boot slid out of the way the cable went into position in the park brake lever very easily. All you need to do then is hop under the vehicle and slide the rubber boot back up into place.
