D1, off roader, 7 seats, on gas?????

Hey there, what you think, anyone out there done this??
I have a 96 D1 3.9, running true tracks, 35" muddies yada, yada, yada. Love to do the tuff stuff, however, i do have a wife and 3.5 kids, yep you heard it i went back for more after the 3rd. So i will have 4 kids in 8 weeks and my disco is running outa space, i have got the milford and LPG ready to install but then saw some dikkie seats for sale and am wondering if i should get them, but what do i do about the LPG and milford. I'm sure we would all like to go together at times and i'm damn sure i will do some extreme runs on my own and don't want to worry about recovery gear etc smacking me in the back of the head, but can i make them feel like they in Jail, mmm could be handy now i think about it. And what about fuel, the savings that come with running LPG will be handy when making those trips to Rover Park, not to mention the supposedly smoother running in the steep hill climbs which i currently am not getting. Then there is the suspension, will need to run heavier springs but then loose flex when doing solo run, so would have to consiodder air bags for the coils.
Any feedback be muchly appreciated as i am lost as to which way to go.

Hi matey. 95 3.9 V8 auto with 250,000 neat on the clock. LPG gives about 350ks in and out to Brisbane - lots of stop start - from 70 litres. Thats pretty tidy give that my wife drives it like she stole it. 30 inch tyres and standard height, but carrying the extra weight on LPG tanks and brush bar.

I have a Milford in both my 02 and 95 and its a great bit of kit. The 95 we have is a 7 seat Dicky style, but with the barrier in you wouldnt want to use the 6th and 7th seat because your head/kids head would hit the barrier in a crash - only a lap belt and inward facing seats are a bit dodgy.

    Cheers

It is illegal to have passengers behind a cargo barrier.

Why not get some good tie down points for the rear floor and not fit the barrier?
For LPG you would have to fit under floor tanks.

can you keep the petrol tank, fit LPG tank/s and still retain full flex and articulation, where do you put it/them. Would the tank be a pair of cylindars like scuba tanks??

My 95 has the main fuel tank removed and 2 scuba tanks and a 40 litre fuel tank placed in the inner guard on the driver's side. 40 l fuel, 70 litres - 75 litres usable LPG. Only a couple of inches at worst clearance loss under the LPG tanks.

    Cheers

Any chance you could post some pics up of your fuel setup Scott?

With 4 kids it's time to sell it and upgrade to a D2 seven seater, at least the 3rd row of seats has lap sash seat belts and will give some room for luggage as well.
The D1 dickie seats are only lap belts and I would not suggest doing any touring with them, only short trips if you have to.
You might look at (heaven forbid I'm saying this) a 2nd hand 80 series cuiser or lower spec 100 series or even a Prado.

I will post some up matey - I will take some soon.

Defender 110 - cant deny that they are a great bit of kit. But there are pros and always cons with any comparo - set aside comfort, for straight off roading the 110 extra length can work against it compared to a D1 in particular and the stiff standard rear springs can limit articulation on the same comparo'

cheers guys, am leaning away from dicky seats, go with the original plan, the wife is going to just have to stay at home on the day trips and take the second vehicle on the longer trips, pain in the ass but original plan was more towards an extreme off roader.
oh and barjop, i think your on the right track, been thinking down that line for when it comes time to start doing some touringm in a few years, i don't think a Disco is well suited for a touring 6 member family.
