Thread: D1 axle breakage

I keep a 20mm long piece of the Turdis' axle in the cubby box in the County as a reminder not to use so much right foot. It doesn't work.

I run 32's (actually 31 1/2") all the time and I check the rears every now and then to see if there is any twist in the weaker points of the axel and so far there hasnt been any signs of problems the fronts are a bit more of an issue to check and I havnt had them out to check.

This isnt the be all and end all though as shock load may not show up as a twisted axel.

I have seen a broken 24 spline though in a Disco due to it hopping up a rocky ledge and it broke off 2" or so from the spline, a real pain to get out as well.

If you run lockers your more likely to break them I believe but again I cant back that up as I dont have lockers and I havnt broken one as yet.

My opinion is that it depends on how you drive with the lockers. I think that if a lock just drives you through without the bucking, jumping and carrying on that an unlocked vehicle may get, then it will be easier on the axles. If you buck and jump while locked then it is significantly harder on the axle.

I'd suggest that some of those axles were probably stressed at some time prior to the actual breakage. The only axle that I've broken was in a Series 2A on Windsor Rd at Baulkham Hills.

My old man did the same thing in his series three. Just done the brakes up and went for a test. Braked hard then dropped back from 4th to 2nd and accelerated, BANG

Funny you should mention that Slunnie the only time I have busted a axle has been recovering someone else

Being a 91 model are you still running the 10 splines or have you upgraded to the 24 spline?

Running the 24 spline.But apparently the 10 spline cv's are stronger

OK i was going to go down to Carrara in the next couple weeks to discuss a set of Maxi Axles but am now worried a little, are they still the best way to go or should i be looking else where.
