On an auto the transfer case input gear and main shaft (whatever it is called in an auto) can both be done in situ can't they? I read that somewhere.
I agree that the price is steep. I bought a V8 manual 94 update base model with factory mags and cruise control, winch and ARB bar, lifted springs and Bilstein shocks etc etc in fantastic nick with 155k on it for $7.2k. That was just over two years ago.
Don't look for a V8 on gas. Look for one without gas who is probably desperate to sell. Then convert it and get the rebate.
