I would start with a 2" suspention lift followed by some muddies around the 245/75/16 (31")mark
CHEERS TIM.
I have recently purchased a 98 Tdi Discovery. It is fairly standard! only modifications are tinted windows camel trophy decal truck mud flaps black rims and a Tjm Bull-Bar (also known as my park by feel bar)...
Ok so as you can see i have a very standard discovery and i am highly interested in getting some new kit on to increase the looks and performance off road, but i dont want to lose the good road handling and economy...
So i here by ask all of you for suggestions on what i should have on my list of modifications and in what order, please keep in mind I'm a poor student so i would like the cheaper side of things! Also if your selling any good gear let me know!

As Tim said mate go with a 2 inch lift. They have the lift kits on ebay for around the $625 mark . It's not top of the range stuff but it works. And a good cheapish tyre is the maxxis bighorn . A lot of members have them here and love them
. I paid $220 each fitted for 32x11.5x15's
.
Simplest most effective upgrade a decent set of tyres. You don't need muddies, but an aggressive set of AT's will transform the offroad performance. BFG, Cooper ST, general grabbers. I won't get involved with the politics of which tyre.
235/70/16 are adequate but 245/75/17 gives an extra 1" diff clearance (ie 29" to 31" diameter). If you go the 245 then you may have to trim rear guards (search camel cut) if you don't want to trim then a good exscuse to upgrade to 2" lift suspension. Rember that bigger 4x4's run around on 33's, 35's and some 37's thats a fair head start your giving them.
Other mods Dual Battery, UHF radio, Cargo barrier, Snorkel. Probably in that order.
Simple start then if as your needs require you can take it further, alot further.

just drive it and see how you go, then you'll know what you need it all depends on the sort of driving you do, you may not need much at all or you may need heaps but i say just get wheeling and you'll know how crazy you wanna go soon enough, 1 thing to remember though is when you start lifting it up and runningh bigger tyres etc is when stuff starts to break like diffs, axles,cv's so it can be a costly exersize, i run my disco stock with a good set of muddies and im happy with everywhere itsw been and i havent broken anything yet (touch wood)
Two things i forgot to mention were a safari snorkel and UHF radio...Also by recently i mean 18months ago so iv had a chance to get out there in the sticks as i live on Mt Sugarloaf...and in my trips i have managed to snap two shocks crack the plastic sill on one side and create new aesthetics to the rear right panel.
I'll have a look at a 2inch lift but does that kind of lift put to much strain on any other components? or is it a fairly safe shock and coil change? (also ill change the steering damp), just iv read of adjustable panhards etc...
Iv been fairly keen on the BFG A/T but not too sure on the cost, but from what you guys have said looks like im looking at around 200-250 for a decent set? what sort of effect would 31's have on the gearing and economy of the disco?
Will the 2inch lift prevent me from needing to cut the guards?
Sorry to ask so many questions which prob seem obvious to you guys but I'm new to the world of 4x4 modifications.
If you run 245/75 or bigger you will need to still trim the rear guard even with a 2" lift. But it's not a big deal and hardly noticeable. Benefits greatly outnumber the drawbacks.
31" on 15 inch rims are slightly larger than 245/75 which are about a 30.5" or thereabouts (depending on brand.)
A 40-50mm lift and slightly bigger tyres will prevent a lot of the scraping and damage you are currently experiencing. No real stress on components.
Best first mod you can do by far.
Then think about a locker in the back( well maybe not on a student allowance )
I noticed you said the word cheap.
Well to get a cheap suspension lift move the rear springs to the front and buy some new taller rear springs to match the amount of lift you get at the front.
Just keep using your existing shock absorbers unless they are dead.
Remove the rear sway bar to get some more rear wheel travel.
All of the above is a waste unless you have some tyres with grip.

I'm not too keen on re-using the shocks or springs i already run as after two snapped shocks i have little faith in them!
Also wouldn't removing the rear sway bar greatly reduce road handling...? Thanks for the very cheap options! Iv found a RR for sale for $2000 and it has a 3" lift with a rear ARB Air Locker so i was thinking of picking that up and putting the suspension and locker into the D1, it also has 33" muddies which i was thinking i could run on w.e trips and use the standard size tyres for the black stuff through the week.
Would these conversions be possible and cost effective? also will running the 33's offroad fowl?
Thanks guys!
