Mate, keep looking till you find the right toy, as for economy, mine uses around 16 - 17l per 100km. When you look at the cost diference per litre, I think it's not too bad.
The most my usage has been was a consistant 26l per 100KM with a very large covered moving trailer on the back, and doing 110km/h for 50% of the trip, and averaging 80 for most of the rest, plus driving for an hour to get out of Sydney first.
As for reliability compared to the deisel, the engine's been the most reliable part of the vehicle. 260 000 without a hiccup (Radiator rodded at about 200 000)
Check the whole vehicle out really well before buying, and look at steering and suspension bushes.

test drove a good example today at newcastle 4wd centre
was a 98, tdi 200kks dual batteries, poly airbags in the rear towbar
great condition drove nicely
they had 11900 on it said they could do it for 9990 cash
however i looked at it there about 4 months ago
so theyve had it for a while they traded it and he said they do need it gone
it had good cooper st;s on it however rego is due 25jan
so i think im going to call him tomoz and tell him ill pay 8k if they do the rego
give him my number tell him if you will take that call me what you think or is that still to much

called em today the best they could do was 9000 with 6months rego
told em i want it for 8with rego if they decide they can do it to call me

Does it have a service history? any warranty? I wouldn't go above your initial price of 8 and 12 months rego unless it has a very good service history.

has service history, dual batteried poly airbags in the rear, uhf, cooper sts with good tread its in good condition but im not going over 8k

Sounds like some nice extras in there. Considering i paid 7k for a stock 97 V8i with service history and 160,000kms i think if you can get it for 8k you'd be doing well.

yea i rekon 8k with rego would be a good buy but i dont think id pay any more than that, they have had it in the yard for atleast 4months that i know of and he did say they do need to get rid of it, they first had it for 15k than reduced it to 11990 when i test drove it he said they could do it for 9990 than on the phone today got him down to 8500 or 9000 with 6months rego told him if he can do it for 8k with rego to ring me am i pushin it a bit to far lol
