4.6L short motor. Ins and outs

I for one would love to get a rough idea of what it'd cost me to swap my 3.9L for a 4.6L bottom end. Given that I'd do all the spanner work myself, would it be worthwhile?

    Anyone been there done that?

Well, it is an easy bolt in job really, but personally If I was to go to that much trouble, I'd at least fit a 5.2 stroker...

Think TRS do crate shorts for about $4000 to $5000 dont they??? New blocks, but not sure what the liner situation is with them (top hat, seated or everyones favourite, the "time to change your engine, AGAIN!!!" part time ones!)

Everything up top will bolt back in including heads, manifolds and injection etc, but chipping and an uprated cam is a good idea to do at the time to make full use of the capacity.

I am investigating options for this at the moment as mine is feeling a bit tired and is producing 21L/100km extraction from my wallet ATM!!!

    G'Day Boxer,

I have not long finished that exact project with my Disco, do a Search on with my user name to check out the build up. I also fitted Wolf Injection, Coil Packs and bosch injectors, ripped out all the LR wiring and started from Scratch !

Like you I work in the industry and have access to workshop etc, and all parts at better pricing. I Also picked up a 4.6 second hand bottom end complete with front timing cover (got rid of Dizzy) and alloy sump for $500.So given that I just could not resist

but in saying that I would hate to add up what it all cost !!

I have done about 2000k so far and just after it being done we were pulling 150kw with 366nm and I have just finished adjusting the bracket for the crank angle sensor to get the timing right and tomorrow night we are putting her on the Dyno again and tuning her right this time !

All in all Im happy with the conversion, it sounds awesome maybe just a bit obnoxious with side access exhaust poking in most Falcon windows at the lights I'm looking forward to getting it a bit better tuned and sorting out a few little problems.

feel free to pm me for any further details and info. Luke from here helped me with the whole set up and he has a 4.6 with wolf in his rangie ! so we are starting to get the bugs sorted out with any problems.

    Cheers
    Jeremy

4.6 all the way. All rangies should have been fitted with them standard. With sequencial injection and multi coil ignition they are simply amazing

Drop that baby engine in a crate, send it over to TRS and they'll do the bore and stroke to 5.2, using your engine.

It is fairly exxy, but there is no substitute for cubes, and no having to convince anyone that it isn't still 'just a 3.9'...

You can even leave the 14CUX ECU etc (with a chip upgrade), HM big bore headers and some decent exhaust work, some distributor graphing and it'll be apples.

Jezzaol 's weapon is a beauty, but with this way you can get some serious torque etc without going for too many mods which will attract unwanted attention from insurance companies and the constabulary ....
