Lionel, yeah I know.Im telling myself a lie

Right now, I do not have the money to go and buy one. Anything extra is going on my home loan. Sure, I could easily get a personal loan for the car, but then I would have 3 cars of my own on a small block of land, with 1 carport, and my girlfriends car too, when she is staying.

Im advertising my 'big car' for sale this week. When (if) that sells, then I will have the money, and the space to buy a car, lift it, bull bar the nose, and put on treads.

Untill then, I am limiting myself by not allowing me to have the cash sitting there.

I will have one sooner than later though Thanks for pointing that one out!

    Buicks cant 4x4 either....

I spend less than $100 dollars on 3rd party property per year (just in case it is my fault and I hit something expensive).

I have saved $25 - 30K over nearly 30 years. I seldom own a car worth more than $10K (mind you I have spent a lot more on some cars).
The last car I wrote off (a HJ GTS Monaro back in the early 80's) I paid $4K for car (spent a $zillion modifying it which would never have been insurable, yeah I know youth is wasted on the young) and then hit a roo about 18 months later. Sold the wreck in parts for $3+K. Insurance would have cost me $1.2K per year plus loading etc. I think the same could apply to most serious modified 4x4 in principle.

I don't even consider it a risk. If I total my Disco tomorrow I can walk away ahead (unless I total myself but that becomes a 3rd party personal injury). If I can recover any thing from wreck it would be a bonus.

Please someone tell me why you would comprehensively insure a vehicle worth less than $10K ? Perhaps I am just jealous of those who can afford $20k+ vehicles that are worth insuring

    Food for thought

The cheapest part of 4x4ing is the fuel!

I have been hit by 2 uninsured drivers. Comprehensive insurance meant my car was fixed (written off in one case - but paid out) without any need for lawyers or court etc - took the hassle away. However, I have 2 cars, the Disco and 67 RT40 Corona, insured with Shannons, my insurance is $500 comprehensive that covers both cars - bull bar included. $250 excess on the Corona, $500 on the Disco. The Disco is also insured for $2k more than I paid....
I am 29 but live in Ballarat, so thankfully the cost of insurance is cheaper there

Basically, your happy not to have insurance, and I'm happy to have insurance (comp. ins. that is)

Lets not beat our heads against walls hey
Hey we are both happy (plus 1 insurance company LOL)

Yes I have been hit by an uninsured drivers on several occasions, I have made a reasonable profit on every occasion. I have always got cash out of them (including 1 difficult ethnic fella who tried to be difficult, however I was more difficult). Most often I would get cash without too much difficulty, but once I used small claims court and one time I had to use heavy handed stand-over tactics .

On every occasion I either repaired myself, kept driving with the damage or just sold/parted out vehicle.
Yes it is a small hastle but I have always swung the situation to suit my own needs. I agree however that many of you may not want to take this risk, Now days my 3rd Party Property insurance policy offers a policy that assists with recovery of costs from uninsured drivers.
