Here's a couple of pics of my rear bar, imported in from uk by rovacraft, paid $650 for it, the 4 bolts in the middle mount it via a heavy duty bracket to the chassis. it's a tight fit but looks good, reduces departure angle slightly and gets rid of the silly plastic end caps! also has hi-lift jack points if you have a defender jack adaptor. 5mm thick steel, made no difference to rear ride height of vehicle
Thats a nice bar and i reckon would be pretty easy to replicate

I made a quick sketch (below) along the lines of my thinking for a tube bar. The lines (thickness not to scale) may be a little off position so the tow bar mounts are not completely hidden.

The bar would utilise the mounting bolts for the Land Rover towbar (as well as the original bumper mount), have infill (with recessed led lights) between upper and lower bars.

The main bar would wrap around the sides (lower section of quarter panel trimmed) and brace in to the chassis where the tied down/front of towbar are bolted (difficult on my right side because of auxiliary tank).

I would incorporate recovery points near the chassis rails. I haven't made up my mind about a swing away mount for the spare to get the load off the rear door.

I have the gear to build it, but it is not high on my priority list - even though I don't have a rear bumper.
Mmmmmmmmm will be interesting to see what you come up with
