I use polystyrene vege/fish boxes for food and instead of an esky, it keps things cooler longer than most eskys.
Plastic boxes with lids for other stuff and sleeping bags blankets and clothes betweeen boxes and bits to keep it together.
Remember heavy stuff at the bottom and jam it in well.

Thanks Slug, I was too lazy to go out and look before
I had to go and actually do some work so had to use the box as I have one still in the back of the 130.

These are the ones we use, # 1105545, basically 1100mm long, 550 wide and 450 high.

The rest of the range is here Trimcast Rotomoulders

We've used and abused ours over the last six or seven years, mostly out in the open on the back of the Patrol ute pretty much day in, day out and they've been 100% reliable.

and that's all I use too, generally broccoli boxes from a friendly fruito.
To get better insulation you have to buy one of the really good boxes ($$), or a fridge like an Evacool.

Exactly they work really well and cost nothing. If I want something to keep a long time I freeze it and put it in a smaller one inside the large one.

Oh.. and don't put the beer and wine in the esky, poly box or fridge. Just atake small cylinder of Co2.

I've just completed packing my D1 and trailer for a 1-2 week pikey park camping trip. There are 2 adults, 1 10 year old and a 5 1/2 month old son. For the son there was a hell of a lot of gear that i wouldn't normally pack ie;portacot, playmat, baby bath and a dingo for when the son misbehaves. For my daughter snorkelling gear, fishing gear, bike and boogie board. Myself and the wife s*** loads of fishing gear, snorkelling gear, chairs millionaires, 2 eskies loaded with coldies, 2 card tables. The neccessities.........Family sized tent, 2 tarps, recovery gear, tools and spare parts.
Maybe a bit of overkill some of this stuff. But I've managed to get it all in neatly and safely.
This trip will be the ultimate test for the new extra heavy duty King Springs all round. Ultimately most of the above gear will be off loaded at our destination. So i can do a fair bit of beach driving and head in land for some bush work.

    Happy New Year Everyone
    Rob

Does anyone ever fasten anything to the factory roof rack?
    Noooooo...... Don't do it!

If you need to stick gear on the roof, you're carrying too much! (OK... If we're talking Disco here, nothing more than a couple of bags of soft stuff).

    Ahhh... Thanks Simon.

The Peli's a guaranteed against almost anything. You can even drive the car over them!!! I have a bright orange one especially for the emergency equipment, first aid & sat phone. This lives in the cabin and should we have to bail out of the car then I make sure it's the one I grab.

As for the Zarges... They're brilliant. There's a seal around the lid to keep the worst of the dust out, they last forever and they're very light. Unfortunately, they're also very expensive but if you keep sniffing around hospitals & medical institutions, you might be able to pick them up cheaper when they have a clear out (they're often used for dry storage of medical equipment). They're also great for storing all the cr@p you gather in your garage.

I bought one of the $150 supercheap roof basketts, I stick mw clothes bags up there wrapped in a tarp.
So far no hassles, even with a few thousand kays including Fraser using this method. I reckon though that a good desert trip with corrugations, NO way.
Basically though, just got back from two weeks down the coast. Can't dothat without a trailer full. All the clothes on top, sleeping gear in the car as well as the WAECO, some other foor stuff in one of the drws. All the tools and spares in the other two drws.
Pretty well everything else including the WEBER int the trailer. We generally carry WAY too much stuff, without it all though the missus won't come, therefore I don't go.
Now have the laptop for DVD's e.t.c. and a good inverter to charge it and the phones, iPods, e.t.c.

I hate having **** floating around in the back so i pack things in duffel or similar bags, bedding /tent usually goes on the rack. Will be taking a trailer from now on as the kids are a bit older now and want bikes and stuff. Some kind of basic drawer / shelf system will be next project i think.
