Personally I do not like roof racks. If you use one keep the weight up top as low as possible.

A load guard is a must! The only loose things allowable in the passenger compartment are soft items.
Commonly used in the UK are wolf boxes which are South African plastic ammo boxes know as wolf boxes. See HERE

Also bungee loops known as gotchas in the yachting world, or used for marquee use are great for keeping stuff rolled up and attached to load guards etc.

    Regards

If you need to stick gear on the roof, you're carrying too much! (OK... If we're talking Disco here, nothing more than a couple of bags of soft stuff).

Those boxes look like red Wolf Boxes to me rather then Pelican Boxes.

Pelican cases can be found HERE

IMO the ones in the back would be better if ratchet straps
    were used rather then bungees.

I remember I bought the first one from Glenfords Tools, not 100% sure about the second but probably Glenfords on another trip to the big smoke.
I've seen them available from camping supplies and disposal stores too.

I remember watching something on telly once about ADF training and they had a couple of those boxes lashed together and were using them as pontoons. Must be fairly water proof
Even though ours are bright blue, they still have the ADF crows foot moulded into them.

    Errrr.... No it didn't!

Plenty of them got rolled on event & even though everything was reinforced to take the loads, it still trashed the cars.

Due to the loads on the roofrack, my car had to be stripped down to the chassis & re-built as the weight had crushed the lower section of the bodywork.

Nothing wrong with roof racks............................................. ....

as long as you know they will affect your centre of gravity when they have stuff on them.
Use them for light bulky stuff.

Ammo Boxes are the GO for me!

I have a plethora of Ammo Boxes (both wood & metal) some dating back to WW1 (probably collectors items for some people) All my heavy items live in these versatile vestibules. I use them around camp for seats, tables, chopping blocks, wheel chocks, anvils and as safety stands to put under vehicle if necessary. Their uses are only limited by ones imagination.

The only other packing gear I take will be my old faithful (original type metal) esky, which still keeps ice for up to 3 days (must get myself one of those "electrickittee" eskys one day ) Perhaps a "milspec" fuel jerry (I always seem to split seams on after market jerrys) and a second spare if going remote or into the rough. (Neither of these animals will fit in any of my old ammo boxes)

I really like the new type milspec "plasticity" boxes but I will be waiting a long time before they fall into my hands or are available cheap as surplus.

Personal gear for me is limited to soft echelon bags or packs which pack on top of ammo boxes.

The only thing ever to go on the Roof are light bulky swag or bivie combos. (using original roof racks without cross beams) just tied down with old fashion rope and those "knot" things most people have forgotten how to tie.
(I am sure there are a few of you out there who still remember, we are a dying breed)

If it does not fit in vehicle it does not go. Even with up to 4 adults I wont take a trailer.

Both my Wife and Daughter refuse to travel with me because I travel so light so it usually always ends up a boys weekend away (more room for beer in the esky)
