    Removing a non-airbag steering wheel

G'day all. First post on this great forum. My old man just bought a 94 Discovery V8i and we're trying to sort out the cruise control issues. ECU seems ok, vacuum lines are cracked and disconnected, but there seems to be an issue with the rotary coupling, as the horn button isn't working as well (horn does when you earth it at the loom going into the wheel.)

Can anyone tell me the trick to removing a non-airbag steering wheel on a 94 Disco? The manual refers to a couple of Torx screws behind the pad but the pad and wheel look like they're one piece. Is it the same as the Defender, where the horn pad is removed to reveal the nut? How does the horn pad come off?

    Thanks.

    Sounder.

edit: Modified thread title.. (brain thinking non-airbag, fingers type non-abs)

    Welcome aboard Sounder,
If it is a non "SRS" (Airbag)vehicle (ABS is brakes), then the wheel should have a 4" diameter pad in the centre with a LR badge in the middle of this, gently prize the centre bit out & the nut is below this. The torx screws refer to the airbag, this is bolted via the torx screws to the steering wheel.
    Hope this helps.

Cheers Pete. Brain was in cruise control. Fixed the thread title.

Thought that was the case, but wanted to confirm before doing any damage.

    Thanks mate.

If you are pulling on the wheel to remove it, do not completely remove the nut unless you want to wear the steering wheel in your face.

I went to remove my steering wheel today... only to find after i removed the center piece, there was a piece of plastic going across inside the steering wheel covering the nut... is this normal? should this just pull out?

    Kind Regards, James.

Yes, there are three parts to remove before you see the nut on a non-airbag steering wheel. The pad with the Land Rover badge. The plastic horn push disc which has four clip-in tabs, use a small screwdriver to push in the tabs gently, and finally the cup that holds the horn contacts. You need to use a small thin screwdriver again and lever the cup out around the edge.
    Hope that helps.
