    Indicator self cancel D1

Hello great gurus of the forum

The other morning I noticed that the click click of the indicator self cancel was noticibly louder than normal when the wheel was rotated left. Going right was same as normal.

It did this for half an hours driving and then went back to normal. I thought "must be that great British plastic they used"

This morning I have no self cancel turning left so I guess the loud clicking was something giving up the ghost. Going right is fine (who said "Then just keep turning right until you're pointing the right way"?)

Has anybody had something similar happen?
Do you think I need to pull the steering wheel off or is the self cancel part of the indicator stalk "clamshell" assembly?

Any pointers will be greatly appreciated

    Jason

No great guru here but I'll see how I go.

There is a cancelling ring under the steering wheel but I feel that your problem might be in the indicator switch itself seeing as it cancels one way but not the other.
Whip the wheel or shroud off & have a squiz.

Talk about coincidence. 2 days ago I replaced my RRC non self cancelling switch with a new one and pulled the old one apart.

The noise and the problem is that there are 2 small brass rollers on the end of protrusions that are supposed to fit into indentations to hold the switch on.

Over time the grease dries out and the rollers stop rolling and a flat is worn on one side of the roller.

This then does not have enough pressure to hold the switch on.

The only answer as far as I can see is a new switch, which I bought for $120 in a Lucas box from CLR 4WD parts who is on this forum.

Boy it works like a new one because it is. I do not know why I waited so long.

You could try a short term cure by spraying WD40 into the back ( nearest the driver)of the base of the switch arm, as this is where the mechanism is.

I tried fixing it once and it just kept stuffing up but that was years ago, some plastic tag or something was worn so I got a second hand one which was only a little bit better and havnt bothered with it since it stuffed up again.

Beware the SWMBO. Mine had problems holding it on in roundabouts.
It became a BIG issue. You have been warned.

If it is the non-airbag D1, it's easy to replace. I did it on our Disco (now sold to 87County) - but the parts are not cheap.
