    My suggestions are:

3.9 petrol - high torque cam (RP4 or similar), tin head gaskets to lift compression, clean up heads around back of inlet valve seats for more flow (not too radical), fit freer flowing 2.25 (if auto) or 2.5 inch (if manual) exhaust from Y back (but keep OE downpipes), advance your ignition timing slightly, use premium fuel.

The ultimate fix is a 4.6 high compression conversion with all the above (except keep the composite head gaskets if you're using 29cc heads) plus a Tornado ECU chip. You can get 300+ftlb of torque with this set up with buckets of toque low down and then a huge boost at 3krpm when it comes "on" properly.

And what do you need to do with the ECU for all this?

After having a good look inside my engine while the heads were off, my 3.9 is still pretty good. Eventually when I can scrape 3 mins together I'm going to make up a turbo manifol for the passenger side and a cross over pipe from the other to feed it. Turboing it shouldn't be too expensive.

Fit the Tornado EPROM chip developed by Mark Adams. It can be tailored to your exact engine specs though chances are, having produced scores of these for RV8 hot wire systems over the years, he'll already have the correct configuration programmed off the shelf.
