replacing a front window winder assembly

Please can someone give me some hints about replacing my winder assembly? Just looking at it I reckon I have to start with the window down, undo the window from the lifter and hoik the window up out of the way, then undo all the screws/bolts holding the assembly in place and bung the new one in. Huh, yeah, I wish it was as easy as that but it looks like a very tight fit to get my hand in the door to fiddle with the mechanism and I'm wondering how the teeth on the winder mesh in to the motor? Should the motor and lifter come out together?
    Thanks crew.

I've tackled both front window winders on my D1. One had problems with the teeth on the motor, the other had problems with the arms.

The one with arm problems seemed to be solved by re-welding the broken steel arms, but eventually it stopped winding again.

After much stuffing around, and repairs that lasted only a few months I bit the bullet and bought 2 new motors and arm assemblies. Cost was $185 each side.

To stop the glass going down too far, and using the final tooth on the gear arm as a stop, I have fitted 2 door stops on each side so that the glass rests on these when it is all the way down, to save pressure on the motor/gear assembly.

If you've got a copy of RAVE you'll do it easily. The only tricky bit is getting the door card off without breaking any of the clips.

Yeah did this recently on my passenger side, found the best way to do it was with the window open about an inch i duct taped it in 5 spots to the rail and then unattached it from the mech and pulled the window out, then replaced and put window back in. I found by not having the glass all the way up i could access all the nuts that hold it in.
