I need a ute for work. I have a nissan navara that's dying of cancer. I'm thinking of chopping the back off my 96 tdi. Using the alloy tray off the navara. Anyone know the pitfalls in this job. I thought (still thinking) about buying a v8 on gas with rear damage. Seems a shame to cut the back off when it's not damaged. If I use mine I at least know what it's like. Well used 340,000km but still running well. Idea's, advise, abuse?

There are photo's of a D2 one on here that is great but that has a lengthened chassis and a steel shell so it's a bit easier to cut and shut tham the ally panels on a D1.
It can be done but would look ****e with the 100" chassis as the back wheels will be too close to the back of the front doors and there will be 5' of tray behind the back wheels and only 3' in front sort of thing.
WIdth isnt so much a problem as the Nav is about the same width as a Disco so that should be fine.
If you had the time and a little money to stuff around, I would look around for a couple of discos that have been ratted for bits and cut them up to get it right before you cut your good one up as this would at least give you an idea of what it will cost to do it right and gived you something to take to an engineer to see what it would need to get passed before you start it propper.

My friends had this conversion done about 6 months ago, by a firm in Pomona. They are very happy with it and it certainly looks the business. I can forward you the details if you like. Also maybe arrange an inspection.

That link has confused me yet again, doesn't take much. If I'm going to spend a bit on it should I start with a d2 or d3 and end up with a more modern unit. A rolled d3 went for $10,000 at auction a while back. I'm the winning bidder on a Mazda ute at the moment so it might do the job for a while. Will also supply the back cut if I eventually go ahead. Decisions decisions. Of course I could just cut the top off and have a style side ute.
I'd like the details of your friend ute. Please

ben at klr automotive has done a discovery trayback, bobtailed im sure hed have a chat.
I'm in the middle of doing a 03 ser 2a disco at the moment.
From the onset I wanted my convertion to look factory, and as such the project is taking heaps longer to finish then i first thought it would. (Its been in my shed 2 and a half years).
The chassis extention is the easy part, chassi, driveline, exhast, fuel lines, wiring its quite straight forward. If i was to do another, all that could be done in a week.
The tedious part is doing the bodywork so that it all looks factory.
Watch this space and in the next week I will try to start a thread in the projects section.
Discovery 2a ute
As I posted before.
This is as factory looking as you could get, Ive seen it in the flesh and I thought as I passed it the first time at Wandin that it was a Patrol as I approached it from the back and was more looking at the Series 1 next to it but when I turned around and saw it was a D2 I had to ask the bloke when LR made a D2 ute and how do I get one?
