You'll probably find that your heater core leaks, and the the previous owner had the heater hoses disconnected at the firewall (engine side). Mine was the sameJust look at the back of the rocker cover area and you will see the two hoses.
Oright so the cold weather is starting to come into play and i have just remembered my heater does not work...I have driven around for the past two winters without the heater but have decided i deserve to not drive to uni with fingers of ice!
My aicon works fine, but when i turn it to heat i still get air flow but just ambient temperatures not heated at all.
So is this a common problem for a 98 D1? it is a 300Tdi
Where should i be looking?
Cheers James.

Is it as simple as plugging the hoses back in?
Yes and no
It's simple to hook them back up, but if the core is leaking you will get coolant all through your carpets. If it's leaking a lot that will lead to low coolant in your system and the possibility of a blown head gasket. Mine was only leaking a little bit, so I ran chem-i-weld through my cooling system as a short term fix. I have now bought a new heater core, but haven't had a chance to install it yet. It's a bugger of a job apparently![]()
I paid $170 new from memory. S/H ones can be got for about $50.

If you find the heater matrix hasn't been disconnected and you still have no heat theres two common reasons Discovery heaters don't work.
First the engines never get up to working temperature in cold weather due to a faulty coolant thermostat. Replace the thermostat, preferably with a genuine LR one.
Second, discovery heaters are renowned for air locks due to inadequate filling of the engine coolant.
The only way to fill the coolant is via the fill point on the top of the thermostat housing. When the system is "full" I also undo the heater flow pipe from the head, hold it up in the air and poor coolant in until it flows out of the head connection and then quickly stick the pipe back on.
The heater flow pipe is the rubber pipe that comes of the top of the head towards the back.
Hope this is of use.
I had a look there today and it appears this is the problem as there are two hoses at the back disconnected with plugs in them...So does this mean i need a new heater core? and thats it?
If yes where is the best place to get one from?
Cheers James.
Ok there is a heater core for sale it is new still in the box for $140 it says for a 95 discovery but they are all the same from memory? mine is a 98 Tdi D1...
Is this the best price i should expect? would it be a good idea to steer clear of a second hand one?
Cheers James...
There is only 5 hrs left to buy it so....![]()
Hi James,
Saw this one, only a few hours to go though, don't really know how good the price is, haven't priced them before.
