Okay, just rang award diffs. He seems to think its a CV too so i'll try and check those out today and if so eliminate them. He quoted $480 for a diff centre so its better than I expected lol. Is it safe to take the front prop shaft out just to get me around for the moment?
Thought that would be a good idea just in case the diff locks up or something horrible.

Thanks for all your help guys, very much appreciated!

I'ts a 98 D1, do they have the 24 spline? I'll ring around for a second hand one if so.

    it will be 24 spline.

Went and spoke to a mechanic friend and he's pretty sure its a CV or axle! But at least thats cheaper than a diff centre!
So my planned relaxing sunday will now be spent pulling the axles and CV's out! Makes me feel a bit better to have a mechanic 2k's down the road!

cv and axle pulls on the front of a rover are easy.
it may be, axle spline broken off at diff end, cv cross has cracked and mashed the 32 spline end of the axle...or it could be the diff center cross pin.
all of the jobs relating to these are easy, just a little time consuming

cv's can be obtained from ebay, they are alright as a stock replacement for general duties.

    cheers phil

    Thanks Phil,

I had the ol' man email me the section of the workshop manual off his RAVE cd and printed it out, looks pretty simple to me.
Just about to have some breaky and head off to get it done, and order the parts tomorrow. will take some pics to show what I have destroyed haha
I'll try to source the best parts I can in the time I need them.... yesterday.... lol
The money i'll be spending on this fix will be taken away from the savings for some the Maxxis Bighorns I want.... Thats ****ed me off as all I needed was one more tyres worth and I was off to get them fitted!!!!!

    Exclamation FOUND THE CULPRATE!!!!!!

Pulled in to the shed... tried the right side.... CV was all good and axle too.
Tried the left side.... same again....

Pulled the diff centre out and got a lovely suprise!!! Black as black oil that looked like metallic paint! Found the centre gears in the bottom of the housing amongst some nasty sharp pieces of metal.
The pin had snapped after what looks like a fair amount of wear just holding on by the centre of the cracked pin.

And also found that the diff centre was a reco one anyway.
    Heres a cpl of pics...

Thanks to everyone for your help and advice!

    Cheers, Brenton

Well I am very happy now! Reco centre is on its way, will be here tomorrow!
Got it through Award Diff and Gearbox Services. I was extremely happy with the quality of service and the help. Got it for $480!!!!
Now to get 2 gaskets and fit it and get the Disco back on the road!!!!

I'll take a few snaps to post of the refit just for those curious to look!

    Cheers,

    Brenton
