300 TDI Wont Start ??

We have tried this but the injector lines are very different, too much to re route correctly. I have some if you want them, but I reckon you'd get them quicker over that side of the country.

Let me know if you need them, I can post them over if you have no luck.:)

Quite a few years ago now we had a EDC engine sent from the UK by a customer who got his brother to source it and freight it. I remember specifically asking them NOT to send us one of these, a Defender one would've been fine:o
It was a disaster as the thing already had a blown head gasket and we had to swap all his parts over, thats when we made the injector line difference discovery.

the firing order will be the same (its been the same on every landy 4 pot since the SI)

checking the order on the back of the pump as described lets you identify which port on the back of the pump is trying to fire pot 1 and then the rest of the pots after that. once youve got the coarse timing it should start and if it wont then its a case of either a, removing the timing gear and redoing the pump timing or b, loosening off the retaining nuts and adjusting the pump position till its timed correctly.

if you get the timing within 10 degress it should start and run but it will be rough

within 5 it will run smoothly but may over heat and knock plenty or suffer low power and smoke

within a degree and you'll notice a little power loss and not great economy (assuming you knew the engine well enough before hand)

Dave, the issue isn't the firing order, it is the shape of the pipes and the orientation of the outlets. It is AFAIR near on impossible to bend and re route the pipes enough without doing them harm. It would be possible, but I wouldn't do it to a customers vehicle, they'd have kittens:o:p

If I could remember which is number one as viewed from the back of the pump then Jezza could butcher/ bend his pipes tonight to get it running at least, but I can't:(

Yeah, I reckon they don't know the meaning of maintenance over there, I'll never recommend sourcing one from UK after seeing that example, was supposed to be low K's too!

He's a good bloke to know ! When I wanted a 4.6 for my other Disco he happened to know a bloke that just happened to have one tucked in a shed covered with cob webs !!:p

if the pump has been rebuilt its possable that its been put in with the plunger in in the wrong orientation or that when it was installed it wasnt timed in correctly.

Im thinking that the coarse timing of the pump hasnt been set up correctly and its firing grossly late or out of phase by at least 1 stroke (probabley not more than 2 as if it was injecting 270 out of phase when he started it on the wd40 and oil it would have inverted a piston or some other engine destroyingly entertaining event)

in the highly unlikely event someones fitted the wrong guts to the pump if pot 1 is correct then pot 4 is also correct but pots 2+3 will be the wrong way around and it should be attempting to run on the 2 pots that are correctly timed

I think hes got the right injector lines for the configuration hes got as the lines for the different pumps dont easily interchange as youve pointed out.

Ive never seen it personally but if its been sitting around for ages he could have 4 siezed injectors.

It could go deeper than that and the whole timing could be out with the cam a notch or 2 out and the pump timed correctly.

I also think that theres something mind blowingly stupid that we're missing such as the wirings been goofed at some point like say the fuel cut off solenoid has been wired up to the glow plugs so once the glow plugs turn off so does the fuel solenoid...

The guy at the injection place that re-built the pump for me is a mate of mine and I know its not impossable but I would almost put my life on it that the pump is done correctly !

In fact I'm almost sure that I have the wrong ones now its been pointed out, as when i fitted the new IP the lines did not fit well !! I had to bend and squeeze to make them right and even then it hits the lift pump!

if thats the case, Eyeball the configuration on another tdi300 compare the routing of the injector lines.

If the lines dont route to the same places regardless of bend then thats your answer.

if they do then your down to pump timing/compression.

IF you can wait till mid to late october Im flying over to perth for my sisters wedding and Im sure I can find an hour or so to chuck at it.

(I'm really curious about this one now)

Also I'm getting married myself next month and taking the TDi WHEN it all comes together OK and heading for the Kimberlies with my Camper that I'm about to finish ! So don't think I'll wait for you to be over ! LOL
