    Time for an update....................

Just got a call from Hobbo, the block is in perfect condition, cylinders still have the machining marks from new.

Head looked good, valves all good, head all square and level, but......... further testing revealed soft spots.

New head is on the way.

    A shame, at only 60,000kms.

I wonder how we'd go pushing for a warranty claim?

Remedy for soft spots in heads is to re-heat treat them.

AFAIK International improved the cooling design from the 300Tdi head. If price is reasonable, I would buy the old head from you and have it fixed for my disco. Send me a pm if interested.

Well that really bothers me. Why should any of us with the 300Tdi or the 200Tdi fork out the bucks when crap like this happens.... not even 30,000 miles.... that is crap.

If your 300 or 200 is in good nick, I wouldn't bother. It's only when it's completely shagged and you need a new motor, you might consider it since the cost difference would be a few grand.

Anyway, If all goes well, we'll pick it up again this weekend.

The reason it took so long, is that the gasket had to come from NZ.

LR has heads in stock, as apparently they use them instead of TDI heads now. But no gaskets................. go figure.

I'm not sure what your point is.

Soft spots in the aluminium head occur as a result of serious overheating.

It has little to do with how many km's have been covered.

If it did 30,000 miles or km's before loosing enough coolant to cause the overheating, then it may have been because of something the owner has done, or not done correctly - I don't know the particulars of this case, just making a general observation based upon other experiences.

The 300Tdi produces quite high performance for it's displacement and mass. It overheats quite quickly if a major leak occurs in the cooling system, which is made worse because the water pump is very high.

It is well worth fitting low water sensors to these engines so they can be shut down before serious damage is done.

    Not sure what caused it.

She gets checked every morning, and fluid levels were good. Not driven hard, not towing loads, no leaks............ nothing

Had just changed all filters, and changed the oil, about 2 weeks prior.

Apparently the report is, it was blowing between cyl 1 and 2 (I think), and now 4 weeks later, still can't seem to get an answer with regards to ETA, or price. Conversations seem to keep going around in circles.

Was originally quoted 6 hours, plus parts (from several sources), but it seems to be blowing way out.

    Well, picked her up tonight.

Drove like a champ through the city, but once you get to a hill, she dies, and will max out at 50 - 60 kph.

I wonder if something has come adrift on the turbo side of things.

    All fixed.

Took off the rocker cover, and the rocker gaps were double what they should have been.

Also, mechanic forgot to refit the boost tube, that runs from the intake chamber to the injector pump.

Therefore, the injector pump was only feeding a basic supply of fuel to the engine, since it couldn't detect the air feed from the turbo.

Once reconnected, there was a good improvement, but still not 100%........

I suggested that they replace the 4 copper washers on the knuckles of the boost tube, just for good measure, and voila. Just like a new one.

    One happy camper.
