    Major service Due Soon D1

    Hello All,

I am going to be doing a major service on my D1 300tdi within the next couple of weeks on a very low budget and just had a few questions regarding it.

1 - i will be replaceing all hoses including the turbo and intercooler. (hoses from british4wd)

2 - Changing all Filters (filter service kits inc Auto from british4wd Auto). Are there any other filters which need changing besides the fuel, air and oil???

3- changing all the oils. (Still not sure which to use) She has over 350,000k's So i need an engine oil which will reduce smoke on start up and general driving. was going to go with the original 15w/40 but dont know if its too thin??

4 - Need to clean and flush out the intercooler, dont know which effective product to use.

5 - going to be changing gasket on auto sump and oil sump.

hopefully will be doing a 2" suspention lift as well but using coils and shocks off a RRC, can that be done???? Not sure of the year RRC.

    Any help would be great.

    Thanks in Advance

    Simon.

    In no particular order:

    4. Intercooler - thinners works well, but remember to let it dry before startup as the fumes predetonate on compression. Turps/Petrol/other degreasers work, you'll see the performance of the product by how much gunk exits the intercooler. (Same warnings as thinners).

    5. Sump gaskets - Can't comment about the auto as I have a manual - but unless the sump leaks, leave it alone. It should not have a gasket, but a bead of suitable oil resistant silicone ( I use Dow Corning 732 from CBC). Read up on the manual as to how to bond the two surfaces - do it right and it will last a real long time without leaks.

Lift: Provided the Rangie was lifted in the first place - fits OK. Don't mix up L & R / F & R.

3.Oils: Since you're down south and it's autumn, provided you don't abuse the engine, 15w/40 will be fine. In summer, if you get into hot areas, maybe 20w/60 (Others may comment on that topic - it's only a suggestion). The trick is change the oil regularly - you'll have noticed how black diesel oil gets. Remember to grease the uni's and props and don't forget the swivels.

The black smoke on startup is a more an injector thing. A huge dose of injector cleaner next time you fill up can reduce the smoke, but it also depends on where you fill up too. Different quality diesel does strange things in a 300tdi

    2. Filters: The sedimenter at the back needs to be disassembled and cleaned, and if you have a defender type fuel lift pump, there is a mesh filter on the top of it that could do with a look-see.

    1. Hoses: For the intercooler pipes, you may want to replace the jubilee clamps with something a bit better - go visit your local bearing shop, and they should have some HD clamps on display. They aren't expensive and use bolts to secure.

    G'day Langy,

Appreciate the feed back. The thing with the auto sump is that the filter kit that i'm getting has a gasket for the sump???? I'll check it out.

    once again thanks.

The D1 auto box has a one piece rubber type of seal between the sump and the pan. It should come with the auto service kit.

I also believe the bolt that holds the auto filter is a Torx bit, number T27.
You'll need this, T27 bit, to change the filter.

    G'day Simon,

I tried a few different solvents to clean my intercooler but found kerosene worked the best. Once it was clean I gave it a quick rinse through with thinners or prepsol (don't 100% recall which one) to remove most of the remaining kero and replace with something more volatile.
Leave it out in the sun afterwards and blow a bit of compressed air through it if you can.
You don't want to end up with solvent in there that the engine can use as fuel when you first start it.

As nice1guv says the auto has a rubber gasket - no need for any sealant. You will need to drop the rear mount to get the trans sump off.
There is also an O ring on the sump pickup. It comes in the kit but make sure you put it on. IIRC there was a thread from someone a few months back that forgot the O ring and had weird (bad) things happen to the trans as it couldn't suck the oil up.

Engine sump has no gasket - just sealant. You need to do a really good job of degreasing both the sump and the flange on the block so that the sealant sticks properly, otherwise you're wasting your time resealing it as it will just leak again.

Since you've got oil leaks, the engine/trans will probably be covered in gunge.
You'll find it much nicer to work on if you take it down the local carwash and blast as much of that crap off with some degreaser and a high pressure wash beforehand.

Can't give you advice on engine oil (I'm just running Castrol RX Super), but they all give a puff of white/grey/black smoke on startup.
I've heard a lot of people say that the 300tdi needs a good workout with a bit of load on to clean glazed bores so maybe a decent run and a bit of injector cleaner might sort out your smoke rather than running different oil.

Make sure you shop around for oil as I found it varies a lot in price for same product.
I paid over $100 for 20L of Castrol RX Super one week at Bursons, then found it the next week on special at Supercheap for about $80

I went through mostly the same exercise when I got Oscar last year, so more than happy to come and give you a hand. Just PM me or give me a call.
I've got grease guns/sealant/tools etc if you need them.

    Steve
