    Walk away or offer low..

I have driven a s1 Disco that is for sale it has a few niggles and bumps because of this I suspect I could get the car for a good price, but before I get over excited I thought I should ask advice from people who know!
The car has a clunk from the front when changing gear as the drive is taken up, could this be bushes?
The whole car feels very soggy, I didn't expect a firm ride but this is like a boat in rough seas! So im guessing it needs new bushes/ shocks?
The rear door wont open, feels like the catch has broken internally.
There was a real stink of petrol when driving at freeway speeds then slowing down, it went away when going through slower areas.
The driver side door has pulled its top hinge so it drops down when you open, and the driver side mirror is held on with tape.. Im guessing that it just needs the door rehung, is this a common problem, the door not the mirror.
I quite liked the car, but I really don't want a project car, i've already got one of them, but I have no issue with spending a few dollars to fix common issues.

    My 2 bob,
Make sure the price is better than a good price
How many K' s, is the oil fresh or stink, blow smoke? gather there is no road worthy supplied, I have a tendency to think if its bad on the out side its going to be worse on the inside, you would hate that little man with the hammer to start tapping inside the motor or box a week after you bought it, All that said maybe its great

    walk away

clunk could be the output shaft in the gearbox (mega $) and if the outside is as good as you describe imagine what you will discover over the next few months....

Yup, what they said. Think about it - there are plenty out there to choose from. If you're not confident - have it checked out by someone. A few bucks spent on vehicle checks will give you an idea on what you need to spend on it. Just have a look at carpoint.com or trading post and you will see there are heaps for sale.

You could easily spend a few grand (or more) to get it roadworthy - better of IMHO looking for one with service records and in reasonable nick.

Petrol discos are not that expensive when in good condition so why go with a dog? You would want to be getting paid if it as bad as you describe.

The clunk is drive train stuff and it is as other have said highly likely to be the gbox output shaft splines. Other things that will contribute are the universals on the drive shaft.

Keep looking, do a search on R380 gearbox output shaft problems on the forum here. The earlier ones had spline wear problems and if caught early can be fixed just by swapping the input gear into the transfer case for one with the longer splines and cross drilled to improve the lube. But if too far gone then you will have to pull the gbox apart to swap out the shaft etc.

Disco? you did not say if it was an auto? clunks and autos I feel will be expensive.
