    don't take it to heart some people come on here and rip of knowldege to make there own finacial gain and sell on a bad vehicle to unsuspecting owners that then buy and think that the landrover marque is a peice of **** because there car breaks down all the time.

    it has happened so people on here get protective of the brand and also the unsuspecting owners.

    The one thing you learn on this site is to take things with a pinch of salt and expect a bit of ribbing we have all had it
    Our Land Rover does not leak oil! it just marks its territory.......

    I cannot believe that someone would ask about reliability of a 17 year old vehicle costing $500.
    This has to be a troll attack !!

    Virtually ANY problem encountered would cost more than the car by a factor of MANY.

    What would anyone expect from any $500 car.

    fair enough, you make a good point, no harm done..

    Phillip, not true dude, im lucky enough that in my job I get to drive around ALOT, in doing that I come across alot of old cars on farms that are not in use anymore.
    The hilux that I bought for $500 was not a wreck or in need of a resto, the guy had got himself a new ute for work and the hilux was just sitting there for 2 years or so. Think about it, how on earth would I sell it? The guy who bought it live in the same suburb as me and I see it from time to time, he tells he that it hasnt missed a heart beat at all, plus, the last thing I need is somone knocking on my door telling me the car I sold them is stuffed.

    Anyway, back to the point....
    Where do landrovers fail the most? Im doing a full check on it this saturday and want to go right over it. Ive been told by people who know nothing that they have weak axles, but even though they know nothing its still in my head.

    Ive posted this topic on another forum, and was told that one guy had never ending problems with it, then another guy goes
    there one of the more reliable V8's out there.

    From my experience...

    I've got a 91 manual V8i that I bought two and a half years ago.

    Back then it had about 200k on it. First thing that happened was the clutch went.

    I had that fixed for a small fortune (nearly 2 grand). Only real problem since the clutch has been the radiator - the car overheated at high revs. Got it re-cored for $600 - that fixed the overheating.

    Ever since it's been pretty close to perfect - except for the suspension, water pump, A/C and after having it converted to gas the Mass Air Flow sensor has completely died (I don't have a spare $900 for a new one sadly, so I'm running it exclusively on gas.)

    But now, new suspension, new radiator, new clutch it's bloody beautiful and I love it even more every day. Who knows, yours may be fine. Good luck.

    I've put about 40k on it now. What you'll find is any model at that age will probably be due for all those problems I had. It's just because of years and Kms. But if it hasn't got a lot of k's on it you might get lucky.

    But be ready for the radiator to be blocked at least. And if it's never had the suspension done it will probably be shot - but that's not going to stop it driving. (either is the radiator really - but if it overheats you're stuffed).

    Apart from all this, it's still a better option than a hilux

    I think you are a very lucky man ,if you can buy $500 cars no problem. The axle thing is if you put big tyres or lockers on . Standard they are fine.

    Main problem areas
    electrics-alternator, starter, dizzy, windows, central locking, fuel pump

    mechanical- head gaskets , radiators, clutches, suspension bushes,steering box, gearbox, transfer case ( last 2 very reliable but these are OLD cars)

    Please note that an old Hilux in the main does not have most of these problem areas or they are reliable ( but much more expensive to replace ) Japanese electrics.

    How reliable is any 18 year old car?

    I bought my D2, have replaced the engine and brought it back up to where it should have been that's why I got it cheap, I have coped no end of **** from my friends who all drive landcruisers, patrols etc, I'm constantly told how the Disco will always break down and have issues, as apparently they all do, aside from the begining where I knew I had to spend some $ to get the car right, I have not had one issue, however, CV's, axle issues, radiators, transfer cases have all been problems experience by the patrols and cruisers.
