Thread: Low fuel warning

The light is triggered by the position of the fuel gauge needle, this should approximate 9L left in the tank. So if the needle moves a little higher the light will go off.

So there is no second warning? mine is just being kind to me?

Sorry to be a nitpicker but AFAIK in an RRC anyway, the light is triggered by the resistance of the signal from the tank reaching a preset level. The gauge is damped so in my case may still show 1/4 yet the light can come on.

Then a timer makes the light stay on for 20 seconds or whatever.

It first comes on while going around RH? corners as the fuel sloshes to one side and stays on for the set time, so if you go around a number of corners it may stay on as each 20 seconds leads into another.

I believe it is supposed to come on continuously on a straight level road with 18 litres left, however obviously it depends on hills/corners etc etc.

With my 140 litre tank it starts to come on with 30 litres left.

Correct there is no second warning

In my D1 it comes on with around 20L left but I have driven till the needle is on the empty line and it still had 9L left

Another answer: I have a manual somewhere that says it comes on when there is approximately 12L left.

...and that the useable volume is 82L.

Would the 7L left in the tank be designed to prevent gunk and water getting into the fuel system.

Wow, lots of conflicting information here.

My owner's handbook uses this precise wording - "When the fuel remaining in the tank is a minimum of 9 litres, the AMBER low fuel warning light will illuminate. If the light illuminates, refuel at the first opportunity."

The fuel tank is 89 litres.

My old LA chassis Discovery was 89 litres too, however the manual stated tank capacities as 89 litres, and 81.8 litres "for earlier models".
