    New Purchase

    Hi All,
I am new to all this so please be patient with me.
I have just purchased a 1998 Series 1 Disco SE7 V8 Petrol. I had a full service and tune on the disco and then headed off with my caravan behind.
I was hoping to get a fuel economy of aroung 20litres per 100km but boy was i wrong it uses about 27litres per 100km at a travelling speed of 80-90km per hour. Can anyone tell me if this is normal or could i have other problems.
    Thanks

Good question but difficult to answer. Many variables involved - wind resistance factor - car and van, gross mass of the car and van, hilly and/or winding roads, vigorous acceleration, on and off the go pedal as in slowing down and speeding up to cope with other traffic/road conditions.

I assume your Disco was running well before towing but did you do a fuel consumption analysis over the weeks before you hooked up the van? If you did this would give you a base line consumption figure for around town and highway travel. Something to compare to.

When was the last time your Disco had a major tune? I would guess that your unladen V8 Disco would use around 20l per 100km around town - stop/start sort of thing.

But having said all this your consumption does not seem totally out of this world with a van behind.

It had a major service last week when i bought it.
Without the van it uses 17-18 litres per 100km.
With the van it uses about 27 litres per 100km.

Sounds about right, at least that is what I got from my V8 Disco over 4 years of ownership.

A service generally means a grease, a change of oil filter and maybe the air filter and a total check of all the cars fluid levels. Don't forget to replace the fuel filter regularly too -it is easily overlooked. But a service does not usually mean a tune and certainly won't include new plugs etc.

The other component to fail regularly and without any visible sign is the vacuum advance diaphragm. The only indication that it has failed [perished rubber] will be increased fuel consumption at highway speeds.

Given the age of your car I wouldn't mind betting that yours is due for replacement. Fix this and your highway fuel consumption will ease - sometimes dramatically.

I had this problem when i bought my 97 V8, and replacing the vacuum advance did make a significant difference.

Is this steady 100kph highway kays???
Another factor is the tyre size you are using ... What size are they??

As the others have mentioned the vacuum advance unit should be checked
You can get these motors down to 14L per 100 ... just takes some proper checks ...

    Hi Mike,
Usuall travel speed is between 80-90kmh.
    The tyres are 235 70R 16.
    Thanks

    I believe he said 80-90 km/h.

The size of the van and towing up hills etc will influence matters.
So will your right foot and try running Pulp.

My vacuum advance was faulty also and did make a difference.

I would have thought 25L -/100 is about right though.

Put it on gas and half your running costs.

A buddy in his Patrol with a 4.8L six in uses 30-35 at times towing a moderate boat.

Trying to make you feel better.
    Is it working?
