    Suspension Bushes

I have a 98 D1 with a 2" lift. I have Dobinson MD springs and Lovelle shocks. The car has clocked up 320,000ks but only 5,000 of these have been on the new lift. Since the lift i have found the steering to kick a lot on tar roads which are off camber and such. My first thought is to replace the steering dampener and i also have panhard rod bushes to go in.

I am thinking of buying all new bushes for the suspension and replacing them all along with a dampener, in effect i hope to get rid of all the giggles i can feel when driving for instance i can feel the what i think is the fron control arm mount just under my right foot when driving over bumps i can feel its moving about...

How much would i be looking at to replace all the bushes? and would it be worth it? i hope to sort one problem out at a time.

    James.

Funny you mention this. I'd only not long worked out a rough price, I was interested to do same.

I arrived at a total cost of $679.30 based on RAVE repair times of roughly 4 hours and all the necessary parts from British4wd at $327.30

well I brought a complete poly bush kit, not the one I thought it was for 160bux from ebay the only thing missing was the shock bushes which I probably wouldn't of fitted..

I was disappointed to find out it wasn't the britpart kit I was after but a kit made by Duparts which I have never heard of....I got the kit and all looks good my only concern was they felt really hard!! my superpro's were hard but you could move the lips ever so slightly on them....So i'm not sure whether to fit this kit now, wondering whether to not fit it and buy the britpart one I was after in the first place.

but even that is around a similar price......

There is a lot of nah sayers on here when it comes to poly's we have used them for years and not had a problem....So might be a cheaper option for you

The Superpro's have got a reputation for being better than rubber. They flex like rubber if not better, and they last longer.

Steering kick is not a normal symptom of worn bushes - wandering is.

Steering kick points to swivel preload in my view, possibly steering damper.

    Cheers guys!

Firstly i will chuck in a new steering dampener and see how things look then... As for wondering the car pulls strongly to the left, i had the alignment done and still have the same pull... so this may be leading to bushes?

As JDNSW has pointed out ... Start with checking the swivel bearings & the preload ... This is your START point ...

Also the "wheel aligner" mechanic .. Did he tell you "What your camber readings" are??

After this ... Then move onto other products that are suspect ...

    Tie rod ends
    Wheel bearings
    Steering box joints
    Bushes
    Dampeners

    Another thought ....

If the wheel alignment was out and you let the car drive this way for a while before you had it looked at .... The tyres are bedded in this tracking pattern and no amount of work will fix it ... other than replacing the tyres with new ones

So borrow a fresh set, to test this theory

No need to frazzle the brain ... You are correct

...known good new shoes just takes any doubt out of it ... nothin worse than spending your weekends replacing "this, that and everthing else" ... just to find out that it was a new set of tyres that was needed ... a simple check, if you have a mate with a Disco handy
