Thread: abs shudder under descent or slippery dirt

If your referring to me I have driven a car in emergency stops and I have done it enough in the disco to be close to ABS country...Just never got the ABS to kick in.

I know I would in a real situation with an object in front of me.

I wont be practising 100k emergency stops around here the only place to do 100 is on the motorway

Sorry... I wasn't referring to you. I read the first post by cuciando. I think I decided to post after the first page and didn't even read your stuff

Having done a lot of driver training over the years it's my standard advice when people talk about this sort of thing. It was well known when ABS was introduced in the US that people would lift when feeling the pulse. It's amazing how many people even lift in controlled situations.

People lifting off when they feel the pulse is a known phenomenon and the manufacturers even build a workaround for this into some systems. Some of them call it Electronic Brake Assist or various other TLA's - but these systems register that about 70% effort recognise that it's and emergency and will apply the other 30% themselves! The systems in the Defender don't do this however.

And my advice would be to get familiar with ABS if you aren't already as it's getting difficult to find cars without it. The last thing you want when you have a nasty surprise is any kind of surprises from your vehicle.

If that means going for a drive to find somewhere to do it then so be it. Also consider a good driver training course in a controlled situation. Even if you've been driving for a while you never know what you might pick up - and even if you've done it all before they offer great opportunities to practice your technique.

Can I just make it clear that if you can break right on the threshold and keep it there in an ABS car that's great and do it. However once the ABS has started to intervene the correct procedure is to nail the pedal as hard as you can. If you have a well calibrated ABS system (my defender seems quite good) then it's almost impossible to beat the electronics in the real world (the electronics can modulate all four wheels independently dependant on the surface where as you only have one control).

ABS saved my partner's and my life in a vehicle pursuit once many moons ago. (We were in a commodore).

I have had to brake very hard when a vehicle did a u-turn in front of me and the ABS worked a treat...missed the other vehicle and the traffic lights and stopped

but it shouldn't kick in when applying a light pressure when doing 40 k/h which is what happened the other morning


BTW it does take some getting used to when 4wding

yhea min was playing up on the old esk rd ....she seem it goes on forward untill it seems to just go bursuk and you get a great loud chilking noise like something is winding up a toy spring

Sounds like you sensors have open circuited. I put mine in for a recent service and I mentioned I had ABS problems and that the anti lock light kept illuminating. The mechanic found both my front sensors knackered (open circuited). He replaced them with 2 second hand sensors and now all is well no abs kicking in when it shouldn't and the warning light no longer illuminated.
Get it fixed before you punt someone up the rear.

How much did the repair cost and where did you get it done?

might be a little strange ...but just had the alternator replaced and went and tested the abs on some dirt..under the same conditions explained and doesn't seem to be a prob....
