Firstly ...The motor pinging means the mechanic has advanced the dizzy too much // Reset it back to .... 3 to 6 degrees (Timing for engine is written on the Drivers side rocker cover)

Secondly ... you changed the plugs & leads .... can you post up what is the brand & serial number of these plugs + the brand of leads??

Thirdly... Take off the rubber hose & suck on the vacuum advance unit ... Is it holding vacuum???

Fourthly?? (is this actually a word??) ... Are you using Gas???

    Does not run on Gas
The leads are Bosch and so are the plugs.
The mechanic advanced it so it would start quicker this was not an issue before swapping the distributor.
I can't look at the disco at the moment as I am working on another car.

Need the actual numbers written on the Bosch plugs ....
Advancing the dizzy and making it Ping is asking for trouble ... and masking it's issues /// Put it back

    Check your vacuum advance

If all your electrics are in good nick .... You could check for water in the fuel ... It will show up in the fuel filter near the petrol tank // but I don't think it's your cause

I'm putting it down to either another faulty distributor or what feeds the distributor like coil etc but I won't be able to tell until I get the new distributor from the UK this week with any luck.

If it were anything from the rotor button onwards then the same issue would have been there when the other distributor was installed infact it went away and was much better and power was restored only when I got back to the disco after paying the grease monkey it would not start straight away so he advanced the distributor so it would so I could get home to Geelong from Melbourne.

I won't be able to look at my disco till the week end to check anything else out and place the distributor were it should be.

Also the grease monkey could have used the wrong distributor that is not suited to my 3.9 engine first he said he didn't have one around then out of no where he produced one that seemed different to mine as mine had the clear plastic inside and the one he replaced it with has black plastic.

Had a look at the disco today wouldn't start for some time regardless were the distributor was set at.

The vacum advance in the distributor seems to be stuffed no resistince either way.

When started and left to idle it would drop in idle and die after awhile.

Are you handy on the the spanners ... or mechanic reliant???

What was wrong with the old Dizzy??

Take the Dizzy cap off ... the rotor button /// give it a wiggle // Does it have play in a sideways direction ??? does it move up & down???

Under the plastic shield cap is the electronic ignition ....
.....The Air gap of the star shaped cog verses the pickup ... what happens to the gap when you wiggle the rotor shaft .... does it close up & touch ??

You have got the new Dizzy coming from the UK .. so fit it ...

If you are going to change the coil // buy a new standard one ... Don't buy a "you beaut wizz bang" electronic coil unit (unless you have researched properly)

All in all ... it could be a case of a new electronic Amplifier .... as that can explain the "runs then dies" bit .... There is a test for this ...

Not sure what was wrong with the old dizzy forgot to ask for it back as I was in a rush to get back to Geelong.

Here is a link to the distributor I have brought of ebay in the UK the guy tells me it will fit and work in my disco I just have to make an extension cable as you can see it has a module on the side and it's 3 pin not 2 pin is this true ? is this the same module that is next to the coil ?

New Discovery 3.9 Efi Range Rover 3.9 Efi Distributor - eBay, Range Rover, Car Parts, Vehicle Parts Accessories. (end time 28-Jun-09 00:18:35 AEST)

You'l be OK ... all the 2 pin modules have been "upgraded" to the 3 pin anyway ... so you would have had to convert either way

Module on side of Dizzy is OK ... Just fit it .... ask for wiring instructions of the module to the coil ... if none came with the new Dizzy

Does anyone here have the wiring instructions ?

Also I assume the module on the dizzy replaces the one next to the coil ?

PS. The guy got back to me on ebay has no clue about this and reckons I will kill the new dizzy.

They guy from ebay has gotten back to me again with wiring details and an offer to purchase the extension lead with the water tight plug.

Even got a pic of it.

Holding the distributor with the module facing towards you,

    Right Terminal - Coil Positive ( + )

    Centre Terminal - Earth

    Left Terminal - Coil Negative ( - )
