    Angry Bloody rust!!

About 6 months ago now i completly striped the interior of my d1 to clean it up and fix the rust in the driver's and pass foot wells.
I took alot of time cutting, grinding, welding and rust proofing the floor to stop the rust for good (rust converter, x-trol, metal primer). today i had to get the pass front seat out so i can weld up a bracket for the locker compressor, i though while the seat was out i'd check how my rust proof job was going. Well most of the x-trol and paint had bubled and the rust had started again, it is very wet under the black lining, i realy need to find all the dang leaks now
But it looks like i'm going have to rip all the carpet and lining out again and find a better rust preventative for round two
Any suggestions on the leaks and another type of rust stuff would be great!!!
Hang on i probably should do a search

    Hey Timbo,

Bugger on the rust mate. I noticed water on my floor too when I put some sound proofing in.

I told mechanic when I got some things checked and he could not find any ingress.

I think it comes through the floor somehow.

I had done some wading before I did the floor and there had been some rain around that time I think. Car sometime smells musty.

But..... only when I have been driving in the rain.....not when it has been sitting out in the rain. Even weeks at a time.

I reckon it comes through the floor somehow... or condensation issue.

I would also be keen to see if anyone else has solved this.

    Good luck mate.

    Jay

mate the best thing to do is to rip out the underlining (deadener) and leave it out the heat from the trans will keep ot dry and at least you wont have that bloody big sponge there every time it rains or get water ingress

    cheers

Make sure all the little nooks and crannys have grommets in them , I also used Sikaflex for better water proofing , I did exactly what you 've done and stripped the interior out and took the floor back down to Bare metal and rust treated the floor and primed and painted the hole floor , including the 2nd row and the back parcel shelf area I placed a grommet in every friggin hole there was , I reckon my Disco would float on water not when you do a river crossing or go through bog hole water ingresses through those little holes and gets soaked into the thick insulation Foam and doesnot get a chance to dry . try that first , otherwise you'll be strippig the lot again and doing it all over again in a few years time

    Thanks everyone
all those holes in the floor have plugs in them (i think) but they don't really seal well
I think i might take your advice and use Sikaflex around every bloody plug, i got my hands on some spare plugs to
Yesterday i pressure washed the carpets and underlay spunge and is currently drying out in the sun. just about to attack the footwells and i think i might try out some of this tectyl stuff, sounds the goods

P.S i don't think you get rid of the foot wells with a ute chop
Still i could use it as an excuse

    Rust

It's a bastard isn't it. Should see the rust in the floor of the 92 Vogue SE I just bought Tectyl is the best gear for it, never used it but all the people who have swear by the stuff.

I had problems with moisture when the one way drains for the AC were blocked.
