The OE exhaust manifolds are quite efficient and help make torque. I recommend you keep them and concentrate on the rest of the exhaust system from the Y back - 2.5 inch pipe + freeflow muffler (e.g. Supercat) + freeflow resonator.
    This.

When I had the exhaust done on my disco I got them to replace the Y-piece as well as it was a horribly pressed bent piece of tube. To me it looks like the worst made up part of the system. I should have specifically requested from the header/manifold flange back as all they did was cut off the Y-piece before the bend and welded new tubes up. Worked well but just looked messy.

When you look at the design of the OEM manifolds they are 4/2/1, same as your extractors (and we're not getting into the extractor vs header argument). On the positive, they match the basic shape od the ports ad just need a clean up, can be easily ceramic coated which reduces the under bonnet temps dramatically. Aftermarket pipework isn't as favoured by some of the coaters as it's harder to get it to stick.

Right or wrong given what others have said my 300,000 kilometre 3.9 D1 goes extremely well with headers, Bosch coil and Unichip fitted. fuel economy is crap, power for an old worn out small capacity V8 is bloody good.

How Good? Blows the doors off of my V8 D2a and nearly keeps up with our TDV6 D3. If that is how a standard 3.9 is meant to go then all D2 owners should be very upset.

    cheers,
    Terry

D2's run stupidly lean and you only realise how bad when you fit a 4.6. Also there's a weight difference in there as well.

Hell even the 4.6 on the 4.0 computer is better, I had it on a motec M84 and WOW by comparison. Even at a base running tune power was up by 42HP and torque buy about 80. Has the usual issues of security to get around which is why I'm still shopping around and trialling different ecu's with the same base tune specs.
