Thread: Removal of 300TDI head

First thing I would do is get a manual then have a read of it.
If you feel confident and have the tools the give it ago worst come to worst give a mobile mechanic a call to finish the job.

No really get a manual and work through it and you should be good worst thing will be setting the tappets.

The Rave disc in the shop section is a really, really, really good idea.

Whilst the job of replacing the head gasket is relatively easy, there are a few things the LR engineers do differently. And, if you do it right, it will last.

As for dropping the oil & coolant - if you are careful scraping the old gasket off the block, maybe you can avoid draining the oil ( An oil & filter change afterwards is a good idea anyway)

You will need to open the block drain port ( Behind the alt ) and drain the entire block, because the mating faces of the head and block need to be really clean. ( I used thinners for the final clean for example) You can't have coolant sloshing around ruining things.

Watch when dissembling the rocker shaft - each valve stem has a 'cap' of hardened metal that just sits between it and the rocker arm. Don't loose them down the sump.

Make sure you've got all the relevant tools before you start!

You'll need an inlet gasket as well as the head gasket.

Make sure you've got the correct head gasket... They're different thicknesses and are denoted by the number of holes on a tab. This tab is visible when fitted so make sure you're replacing like for like.

You might as well prepare yourself to do an oil change too as you normally end up dropping at least some coolant into the engine.

Keep the push-rods and caps in order and re-fit in the same sequence.

When readjusting the tappits, just use the 'Rule of 9'. i.e. When valve number 2 is down, adjust the tappit on valve number 7.

What is this rave disk and where do i get it.

I read on the forum if you take the head of and put the push-rods back in same spot you don't have to reset any tappets is this correct.

Do you have a Torque Wrench and an Angle Gauge for retensioning the head bolts, you will also need Feeler gauges, the Rave CD is available on this Forum. If you dont have the correct tools and you have never attempted this procedure before, it would be wise to get someone to help you that has some experience, maybe if you posted your whereabouts someone close by could assist, Regards Frank.
