    Question V8, oil filter change

i've recently bought a '96 v8/petrol disco. i'm about to do my first oil change, and the LR workshop manual says "caution: v8 petrol engines. the engine oil filter must not be removed whilst the sump is empty, otherwise the oil pump may have to be primed." can anyone shed some light on this? i'd like to think the shop manual knows better than me (i'm no mechanic), but i don't fancy the oil shower that will most likely occur if i remove the filter before i drain the oil (and i don't imagine priming the oil pump would be an easy task either). thanks for any input.

    Cobblers.

Especially in your model engine where the oil cooler is above the pump, and will flow back and keep the pump full when the filter is removed. Also, the Serpentine belt engines have their pump driven off the front of the crank, and is a different design to the early ones.

The only time I have had a problem AT ALL is when I left my oil filter off for a week, I then had to prime the pump, but that was an early RR with no cooler.

Don't worry, just drop the sump oil and then the filter, allow to drain until the filter housing stops dripping and attach new filter. You CAN fill the filter first if you want, but not 100% necessary.

Mate , I worked out once I did 42 oil changes on my D1,,
    never filled the filter,,
    maybe I was lucky?

    a tip for you,,
    buy the correct size socket,
and grind half of it off,,
much easier to remove the sump plug.

IT WILL SAVE YOU A LOT OF VERY VERY VERY VERY LOUD TAPPET NOISE OR PRIMING THE PUMP

thanks for all the feedback...i feel much better about doing it myself now. one more question if any of you have an opinion on this...i got some nulon engine oil flush. not sure if i want to use it though. could there be any harm in using this stuff? looking at some of the other forums, it seems like there's a lot of disagreement....

I always prefill my oil filter, but I don't get too concerned about removing the filter while the sump is empty.

I have done more oil changes than I care to remember and I have never had a problem.
