    D1 Auto Low Range

Just a quick question regarding my son's D1. Is it possible on the auto to move off in 2nd or 3rd low range? On our recent trip up north he tried low range on a dune and just dug a hole (4.6ltr). It went up ok in high but since coming home he has questioned the possibility of gear selection in low.

I don't think that can be done.

Once you are at a standstill in the auto, it will only take off in first.

If I put my auto in 2 or 3, it just won't go past the selected gear as you speed up, but it still starts off in first.

You need to let it idle off in first low so that the wheels don't spin, or as you said maybe high is the go with the 4.6.

Also, try a lower tyre pressure next time in the sand, might help first low not spin the tyres.

No it can't. The only auto I know of that will take off in 2nd was the Ford FMX and the C4. My 83 rangie had a ritters C4 conversion and I could take off in 2nd.

I'm not sure if I am correct here but some late model cars have electronic controlled shift patterns unlike older cars where shifting was controlled hydraulically. It might be possible to tinker with the electrics and make it take off in a higher gear.

I shall have to test my P38A. Selecting low range and Sport mode puts the autobox into manual mode so one can select the gears.

So if you put it on high range again, wouldnt first in high range be abouts second in low? Just a thought.

Thats true but he was, I think hoping to slowly drive up this sand track as it had a steep drop off on the left and the track was a very narrow quod bike track. He did manage it in high range without drama.
