    300TDI Timing Cover Bearing

    G'day all,
This is my first post on this forum so I thought that I would make it interesting. Here are some photos showing how I recently got around the problem of replacing my 300TDI timing cover bearing. If anyone has had this problem before I am sure that you would agree that this particular bearing is a doozy. The genuine part only comes in a complete timing cover assembly which is a very expensive part, there is also a LR parts dealer in Tassie selling them for $99on ebay. I just went to my local bearing place and purchased a Chinese (universal bearing company) generic water pump bearing for $30, machined it to size and the rest is history. I have 20,000KMs on the bearing now and it still seems Ok. I check it every time I do an il change.
    Cheers
    John W.

    Great post...and pics

but I believe there is a ford bearing that you can fit with poss no modification you just have to have it pressed in I think this was done with mine.

If you do a search you can get the part numbers for it on here

You need to cut the ford one down as it is the same as used above, the bearing is a universal size but shaft is longer than the LR one.

Good work, I just removed the rear grease seal, washed out the old grease, repacked with HTB grease, replaced the grease seal and smeared some silicon over the seal. As long as the bearing isn't buggered, repacking saves a lot of time and money, I will do it every time I change the timing belt, did the same with the air con compressor tensioner and idler, Regards Frank.
