    Hi or Low Mount winch????

I know nothing about winches but are fitting a ARD delux bar I see there are 2 mounting spots one for High and one for low.
What are the pro and cons for either setup.

i may be very wrong, but i recall being told by arb that a disco can only fit a low mount. ( that is series 1 ) because of the nerrow chassis we are quite limited in the option that will fit aswell.

You can fit a highmount to a disco but the bar will have to be modded as it interferes with the lower horizontal tube - this is a non airbag bar though.

Well after upgrading and i mean upgrading from a sludgemount to a high mount winch id say go the high mount
Starters is your motor is mounted higher out of sludge ,s way the brake is not prone to gunge up with sludge you can fit more cable it is easier to work on in the bar and it will fit in between the chassis rails on a d1 and d2 as well as Defenders
In my opinion id say o the high mount

high mount is definately the way to go as mentioned but depends on your budget. I think the Warn highmount costs around the $3k mark these days

??? The Bar is a non Airbag.
It has 2 fairlead holes, one on top and a lower one also, as it is a Disco Bar I can't see ARB building it to require mods to fit a winch?

Some of the early bars may have been based on the RRC bar so fit a highmount but most of the ones i have seen had to be cut to fit, Chops on this forum had to cut his for it to fit.

thehighmount is generally regarded as a better winch however you may need to do some slight trimming to your grill to make it fit.

I have a highmount on my disco, however the bar is set well back and so had to do a bit more than just slight trimming.

Depending on what it is you are going to use it for ??

A high mount has a much quicker respool speed, as well as the drum does not get hot due to the braking not being inside the spool & the motor being away from the spool.
The advantages of this mean you can run synthetic rope for long periods with out worry of the heat destroying it.
The high mount is also only available in 8000 lb last time I checked, so if it is on a touring outfit towing a camper, it may be punching above it's weight.
Lowmounts come in much higher poundages, think my current is 12000lb from memory. But they come in 15000lb & I am sure higher if you wanted

If it is just for general use, a low mount winch is a much more economical option, there are plenty of low mounts you can run synthetic rope on these days, you just have to watch the heat on extended winch's ( I am talking long periods)
As for the sludging of a low mount, there are water proof kits available for some brands. But a high mount is also prone to the same problems, it is just a little higher to start with.

I have been running t-max lowmounts for a few years now, the only reason I have brought a new one is if I sold the last one on a vehicle
A good service every 12 months & they never miss a beat, & they have had a flogging.

Hope this might have helped you in some way.
