    Suspension Question???

    Hi all,

I am an absolute beginner so please excuse me if I sound a bit dumb here...(or a lot!)

I have a '97 300TDI Disco that I bought about 5 years ago...I have always loved this car but have been very busy with two new children and studying my masters since getting it and am only now finding the time to think about having some fun in it and getting some "work" done on it.

Having said all that I am interested in finding out about the type of suspension I have and what it is for...let me explain.

When I bought it the guy showed me that it had airbags within the rear suspension coils and that there are two car valve type fittings attached to the rear bumper. I paid attention at the time as best I could but was honestly only interested in getting in and driving home. The vehicle has been lifted as well and I have always assumed that I could attach a compressor to these valves on the bumper and adjust the ride height or maybe the ride harshness. I thought that this might be for towing purposes but as I said I am pretty dumb about this stuff and don't really know.

I am happy to take some pictures and attach but just thought I would post on the off chance that someone knows exactly what I am talking about and could tell me what I might have and if my assumptions are near the mark???

Thanks for any and all help!

Ah yes, you've come to the right place Gringo.
    Welcome to the site.
The Airbags you speak of are usually installed so you can adjust the rear enad height when towing. As you asumed, you go down to the local garage and use the tyre inflator to inflate them.
I've never used them myself so this is basically just a quick rundown on them.
They are very popular though, on may different vehicles, so someone here wil get a bit further into them for you.

Probably Polyairs (or similar) - air bags that are fitted inside the rear coil springs usually with independant "car valve type fittings" to adjust pressures.
Pressure/s can be varied between 4 and 20psi depending on load - either internally or tow ball weight - to relevel vehicle.
Do a search on this forum or Google Polyair Springs.
