Yep, for the cost of a few hundred you can potentially save thousands and of course the hassle that goes with it.
In year 2003 I installed my "self made protector", two times it did its work and saved my engine.
If any interested to see its story http://ar.geocities.com/vigiland4/Vi...l/Vigi_tip.htm

My workshop manual doesn't talk about a P gasket. Are P gaskets landrover specific?
Gazz
GAZZ, the "P" Gasket is Land Rover specific (in my country you can find it as a International-Maxxion or MWM spare part, too).
Here is the good one (LR PET100790 , that is different from the original paper one installed).

P gasket is not the official name. We call it that because the shape resembles the letter 'P'.
As everyone has suggested, replace it while you are working in that area as they are a common culprit for coolant loss in the 300Tdi.
These are pics of the metal P gasket I keep in my disco as a spare.
Edit: orientation of gasket in the 1st pic was determined by the package, it may be mirrored or reversed when depicted in your manual.
I finally finished puting in the new pump today!
Don't you just love the position of the pulley for the power steering pump, the space between it and the plastic cowl for the fan made it an interesting experience. The bearing on the old pump was totally destroyed God knows how the pump was working at all.
The tip about unbolting the expansion tank and lifting it so it is the highest point worked a treat for eleminating air pockets.
Thanks everyone for your help.
Gazz
PS has anyone thought of having a level indicator in the expansion tank? or tried to install on.
We do the get the hardwear from?
