ticking engine low oil pressure compleate rebuild

i recently did a full engine rebuild in a 1997 3.9 petrol , i had a video posted on you tube before the engine rebuild, some one had pm me saying that they had the same problem so i decided to start a thread.

the problem, low oil pressure caused loud valve tapping started as a small gental tick. after stripping the engine i found the oil pick up straner tube had come lose where it blots to the engine block with 2 bolts both 1/4" unc. i came to the conclusion that the bolts were too short for the job being only 5/8" long and going through a 1/4" thick straner there was only about 3/8" of bolt penatration into the block, it was replaced with 1" long blots coverd in lock tight and also having a tooth type lock washer and being torqued to 7 foot pounds.

my advice to any one having a small tick sound would be to remove the oil pan and check the bolts to the pick up, also replace them with longer ones and at leaset put tooth washers on them.

the first thing people think of is to put thicker oil in, to stop the tick, in this instance, it would have made it worse, as the thicker oil would have created a higher vaccume in the pick up and forced more air to seep in to the loose strainer.

some one it the usa pm me about there engine, he said that he pulled the engine and is looking at it, primaraly the oil pump is damaged because it ran dry, it becomes scored and loses its sealing serface. it is nessasary to replace the timing cover as a whole aprox 1200 from land rover au or 650 au from rpi engineering in the uk, second the bearings need to be replaced including the mains and rod bearits, if you are keen enoughf you can do this from the bottom, however for all the trubble you may as well pull the engine and remove the crank to have it ground. (aprox $ 250) this will bring up the oil pressure,

if you would like to see a video of the land rover engine rebuilt, on you tube look up , " LAND ROVER DISCOVERY ENGINE REBUILD" i poped some guns and roses music in there too, its good stuff. if any one has any questions about where to get parts or how it was done i would be happy to help. thanks again to all intrested in the thread.
