the problem, low oil pressure caused loud valve tapping started as a small gental tick. after stripping the engine i found the oil pick up straner tube had come lose where it blots to the engine block with 2 bolts both 1/4" unc. i came to the conclusion that the bolts were too short for the job being only 5/8" long and going through a 1/4" thick straner there was only about 3/8" of bolt penatration into the block, it was replaced with 1" long blots coverd in lock tight and also having a tooth type lock washer and being torqued to 7 foot pounds.
my advice to any one having a small tick sound would be to remove the oil pan and check the bolts to the pick up, also replace them with longer ones and at leaset put tooth washers on them.
the first thing people think of is to put thicker oil in, to stop the tick, in this instance, it would have made it worse, as the thicker oil would have created a higher vaccume in the pick up and forced more air to seep in to the loose strainer.
