Hi Guys (and gals),
Hoping for some helpful hints as I am having problems with my Disco ('96 300TDi)
The problem I am having is that she'll run fine for 30/40 mins, then the temperature will shoot to hot, pull over let it cool down bleed and fill through thermostat housing, all good for another 30 mins.
I am getting a lot of back pressure into the expansion bottle - with the engine running the bottle fills up and overflows through the cap, unless i release the pressure through the thermostat.
She had a new Head + radiator hoses and rad flush 2000KMs ago and has been doing this only for the last 300Kms.
So any ideas???
(since I bought it 10000KMs ago i've replaced the Injector pump, heads+ several rad hoses. Pity really as between my own cars and work cars i've had 8 LR's and 7 have been 300TDi's all have done over 300000 miles without a problem- i thought they were bullet proof
)
No, the injector pump was done by a dealer, and the heads etc.. by a local garage /mechanic.
(I like tinkering/servicing my cars but that's a bit (well a lot) beyond my level)
I had the same symptoms you describe, I went through the new thermostst, Radiator, hoses etc., didn't want to believe it was the head gasket as it was running well, no water in oil or vice-versa. But it was the head gasket, when you get it replaced make sure you take it to an experienced Land Rover expert who will use new head bolts and torque the head down correctly and use a Quality head gasket, Regards Frank.
Is your thermostat ok. The first thing I would do is remove the thermostat and see if you still have the problem. If it is still there I would suggest it is a head problem.
If it was a petrol engine I would then do a cylinder leak test. I would assume the same could be done through the glow plug hole on a diesel.
Dave.
Had similar problem. Head gasket. Fixed mine myself for around $400, which included a head skim.
Check for bubbles in the header tank. Otherwise some radiator places offer a gas analysis service (detects exhaust gases emmitted from header tank), but becareful - as they do have a conflict of interest.
I had same syptoms as well but mine heated up alot quicker, i had to get out of trouble i would take the over flow cap off so it would not build up pressure but would soon run low on water, id suggest not driving it getting it hot as you will soften the alloy head and need a good machine if its ok (mine needed a few skims and was just ok) , new head i think is around 1200. good luck
