    Rough Idling Again...

I know searching for "rough idle disco" on this forum brings up a million results but I still can't quite find the answer to my problem....

A few days ago I put some Super-Duper-premium unleaded petrol into my Auto V8 Disco 1 instead of the usual 91RON cheapo unleaded. After a few km I found that the engine was getting the shakes at lights and almost cutting out before recovering and then nearly cutting out again before recovering and so on.

I also noticed that on the highway it was noticeable that the engine was occasionally missing when driving along. However, on LPG everything runs fine. Idles fine at lights, runs fine under load.

Today, I filled up the take with good ol' ordinary unleaded. Under load everything is fine on petrol and LPG but at lights the problem remain when on petrol.

The symptoms on petrol are pretty much as described in this thread. Is the MAF on the way out? Would a wonky MAF only affect running on petrol?

Also, tonight when running on petrol I put my foot down to overtake - the auto went down a gear and shot off with great speed but blowing a bit of smoke for a moment.

    Any ideas, tips or suggestions?

    Thanks in advance!

*Edit. When revving the engine it runs sweet sounding and smooth on LPG but when on petrol it splutters a fair bit.

mmmm used to do that on ours at the lights too or sitting in slow moving traffic...with the V8 because of the MAF.

but ours also used to cut out and coast at times, sometimes we could get it to start again sometimes we couldn't.

I had exactly the same problem with a D1 on gas, would always go but was annoying on petrol and seemed to clear after about 2000 revs. I decided to get it looked at so pressure cleaned the engine for the workshop and the problem disapeared. Don't know if it was dirt in a linkage or what? thought it was going to be some sort of electrical problem never found out. Good luck.

My guess is that the 98 octane has much more detergent than 91 and has dislodged some crap from the rail or hoses into the filter baskets in the injectors, or maybe partially blocked one or more pintels.

If it continues, perhaps it would be worthwhile having an injector clean done.

i did a test on my lpg disco (3.9) at idle i removed maf sensor plug, it died. even if i rev the engine running on petrol it will die, wont even run , i have a lucus maf btw. when it is running on lpg it can be removed with out any efect. the system is compleatly diffrent, there is a seprit maf sensor for lpg, i have a smal lego type block with a manafold vacume in one side and gas pressure tapped off the lpg injector side, with 4 wire loom coming off it ang going to the lpg computer, so that is what is regulating the air flow, not idea, as its not as accurate as the maf sensor, how ever that is how it works and could be youre vareation in how she is running, second have you checked your timing , ? you wont beleave me but i run on 13 deg before top dead center, it dosent ping on petrol because im on high octane, just to start and then on lpg it dosent ping because lpg is higher octane that petrol. if you do your own test, keep jacking up the timing untill it pings when you excelerate on petrol, then back it off 2 deg or so, then run it on lpg it will never ping, that will give you the optimum power, thats what im on any how. my engine has other mods tho too, im on 10.5 to one compression ratio, that souldent affect your setting as the high ratio would make pre detination more prone in my car than a stock compression ratio of 8.13 let me know how you traval, if you have dromas, pm me and ill drop you my cell number. cheers.
